Great product for Fixing broken interrior trim and sunvisors
Hey Y'all,
I found an awesome product!!! The sun visor vanity light cover was broken off when I got my car. $150-300 for a used or new visor. Went to the junk yard. Found a tan visor out of a newer car than my 1982 300sd. The vanity mirror is glued in. It just pops out, but do it carefully. Then take the mirror cover off to access the bulbs. Separate the two parts. pop the glass and light covers out of the front piece and paint with this great product. SEM Color Coat Flexible Coating by SEM Products INC 651 Michael Wylie Dr. Charlotte, NC 28217 or (701)522-1006 All the Mercedes parts sites wanted big bucks $25 or more for dye for hard plastic and vinyl. SEM can be found at NAPA for $5 a can. It did an awesome job on my vanity mirror cover from the parts yard that I paid $10 for. After coloring with SEM just reassemble the new vanity mirror - by the way, the newer mirrors have a better design and will not break as easily. They do fit the older visors without ever having to take your old visor out of your car. Big $$$ savings. |

When you say "newer" vanity mirrors will fit the older visors, how much newer? I have looked many times for a vanity mirror to replace the drivers side and anything close to the same year is even worse than the one I currently have.
Thanks for the info on the dye product.

Did not know if you guys were aware of this, but the 86 plus models' visors are extendable, try some time and see!! Who would pay 150-200 for a USED visor. MB parts recyclers have them for 20.

I got a "used" but in great condition passenger side mirror for $75.00 recently at a local boneyard here in Austin, vs. a $300 at a Dealer.

Junkyard visors
The visors looked like a sack of "taters" in both the driver and the parts car, it did not appear to be worth the trouble to try to rebuild so I grabbed a couple of different sets last time I was in the junkyard.
I had a choice of colors, mirrors, lights and all but wrong brands and no easy way to bolt up without changing the holes on both ends. I must have been bored but I thought I would try to use the mounting plate and rod off the merc visors in the off brand visors, no fit, different length and indents so I cut the mounting base of the merc visor, pulled the rod out of off brand, cut and welded it to the merc rod and base. A little grinding and paint and the weld hides in the visor so everything looks stock. Of course I tried to force the new visor in the old holder near the rearview and cracked it into little ugly pieces but I grabbed one from the parts car and filed the opening until it felt good on the new visor, some vinyl paint and everything looks and fits great. A waste of a day and I'm sure I could have bought them from MB or even Rolls cheaper but they look good and I checked another project off the list.

Willrev,
I agree, that SEM stuff is the greatest invention since sliced bread. I used the same approach for the sunvisors on my 300D. JCD |

The 'best' yard here in Tallahassee refered me to the "Mercedes" guy when I brought them a part once. I call it best due to selection not price. They've probably got about 20 123 sedans and maybe 4 wagons. I swear the guy my look up the dealer price than give you 20% since its used. I've only bought 1 thing from them and thats becuase I needed it that day.
The other place I go, only has 3 123s. But I just bought a pair of nice amber fog lights for $10.
