220D Bad Guy Getaway Car!
Last night I watched an old action thriller called "Desparate Hours" (Mickey Rourke, Anthony Hopkins). It featured a lot of nice cars- MB 300TD, Jag XJ-S, Aston Martin, BMW 7 Series, and a few hot babes too. But in one scene an early '70's 220D was used by one of the bad guys as a getaway car! Was it ever smokin'! It met it's sad end getting stuck in a gravel pit though. In the beginning of the scene the car was white, and at the end it was silver! Made me wonder how many they had to wreck to shoot that whole sequence. Anyone know of other movies featuring MB Diesels?

Back around 1990 when I bought a 76 240D I was worried that someone would steal it. It was the "newest" car I had ever bought. I asked my mechanic if we could put something on it like a cut off switch or something to thwart a car thief. He laughed and said "it's not exactly a get away car, you know!" After I drove it for awhile I knew exactly what he meant and I never worried about it again!

There's a feature on this in latest "Mercedes Enthusiast"...
focus is mainly on "Ronin", but others may be mentioned.
A big '80s Mercedes sedan is rolled in "The Limey," and Mercedes-Benzes showed up regularly in Bond films. A ponton was used in that Dana Carvey movie where he loses his memory. Most famous Mercedes in movies must be the late '50s cabriolet driven by Cary Grant in "North by Northwest". There may be a thread on these somewhere on the site... |
