Water in trunk

My 240D/77 has developed a rather nasty leak in the trunk, it is leaking at the rear windshield gasket, what is the best marerial to seal this? would appreciate any recommendation and tips.

You probably need a new rear window gasket. When you take the old one out, there is a high probability of a rust hole under the gasket.

What Paul said is true....
but I , as a one man shop, chickened out on taking all that metal out to put in a new gasket...
I cut out all the gasket I could without making it fall out of its hole... and put Black Automotive Silicone sealer into mine....
Stopped the leak completely... cost about $20 total for the two caulking tubes....
What is nice is taking the trunk lid off to work on the windshield.... very light trunk lid... only four bolts.. and nicest thing is that it will sit in place due to the foresight of MB in putting a little tab between the bolts.... very cool....

Get a new gasket. I just replaced the gasket on my 1989 560SEC and it cost $99. Installation at a professional glass shop was $125. or you can (carefully) do it yourself.

Rust under rear window seal

Take a look here and see what your leaking rear window is probably doing to your 123 chassis.

Does the term "cancer" seem accurate?

Yep, that's it. Mine wasn't quite that bad, but it did need some bondo treatment before the glass went back in. No leaks since the repair and new gasket.

The Practical Logistics

That is certainly cancer... and should be addressed...

However, you can't just pick up a gasket and either take the car to the glass people..... or have them come out and put it in at your location....

You will find that no one will promise that they can get the old glass out and reuse it... old glass is brittle... they just won't promise that...

And this is a three step operation.... the first and third of which most people are not equiped to do themselves...

Thus you must have someone take out the glass... THEN take the time and effort to fix the CANCER.... which includes drying time for several things..

Then you have the people put the glass and gasket back into the car...

That is why I chickened out and did what I did to try to preserve the inside floor until I could figure out how to do the above...

Cancer treatment

I had my glass man take the front and rear glass out 4 weeks ago. I paid him half and he taught me a few things while he was doing the work. He restores old Chevys and was very empathetic toward my "holy problem."

The previous pics were the "before" shots. The "after" shots are forthcoming. I'm waiting on a little drier air before I paint over the fiberglas and bondo I used for the repairs.

I did my inside floors first with a combination of steel (18 gauge, 22 gauge) and fiberglas. Nothing left but Brown Bread sound insulation from B-quiet.com

Well, Tell us what he taught you ....

I live 20 miles from the closest glass place... they were going to charge me full price for each visit.... and I don't blame them....

Removal is easier than replacement

With the nearest pro charging you that much you should remove your glass yourself.

He used a very sharp, heavy-duty razor knife. He wears mechanic's gloves at all times. He began by cutting away small pieces to enable him to remove the aluminum trim parts. Keeping the trim unmolested is a primary concern. When the trim comes out, put it in the trunk or other safe place where it will not be touched until the replacement.

After the trim is removed he cut just above and below the glass to free it from the old gasket. I already had a protective blanket on the hood and trunk so he just rolled the glass out from the top over on to the blanket. We stored both pieces of glass, on blankets, on the roof. The front windshield is much stronger, laminated glass. He put the front glass on the roof first, put foam rubber on it, then set the rear glass on the foam. See the pictures for the stacked glass and my repair patches of the rear corner cancer. The black is POR-15, the red is bondo, and the rest is fiberglas.

Thanks for your help and recommendations, Those photos are scary. In a month or two I am taking my 240D for a major rust proofing and painting, just have to add the rear window gasket replacement in the overall job. I am looking at about $2500 for entire affair.
