Angry "If it aint broke, don't fix it" --- I guess I should follow that rule

I should learn from some of you guys that run around this forum screaming, "if it aint broke, don't fix it." I broke something so simple, very simple. As I was parting my donor car I came across a brand new front dome light. "Wow, what a find, still in the box." I figured that I had to install it in my other 240D. Installation took about 10 seconds and I did not even think about trying to see if it works. I just flicked the switch and it turned on so I walked away. Today at night I went in my car and realized that the light was not on when I opened the driver door. I figured something was wrong with the light so I installed my old one back, still was not working with the door opened. I opened the passanger side and the light turns on..... only when the driver door opens the light does not want to turn on. Any suggestions to this ?

Thanks

My 82 300D's front dome light operates the same way. It's been like that since I got it.

Sounds like a door switch-still got one in the parts car? I do the same thing myself-always jumping to conclusions.

same thing here, I open my driver side door and no lights (dome) at all come on. Even the little light under the bottom of the door doesn't come on. Now when the passenger side door is open the dome light comes on and so does the little light under the driver side door as it opens. Hmmmm, weird. Must be a switch on the driver side door

Talking You would love this. I spent 2 hours at lunch

trying to get a small 1/4 inch ratchet with 10mm socket that slipped out of a cold stiff hand into my crankshaft pulley area and wedged itself between the pulley and the balancer--all because i wanted to tighten the hose on a hose on the fuel preheat system I put in.
It was a one-in-a-million chance for it to land that way!!
If I didnt take the wrench out, maybe I could have driven the car anyway, but with my luck, it would have done some major damage like pop the front crank seal, or mess up my harmonic balancer plate--
The socket on the ratchet made it impossible to retreive, it made the wrnch "triply" thick..
I tried to put my hand down there and twisted and dislocated and silly puttied it into various painful blood draining forms in order to get some pressure on the wrench..
Next I stuck my other hand down there..
Next I got that hand caught in the pulley area trying to get the wrench out.
I was in my company parking lot. I am supposed to be a auto repair legend, so i couldnt yell or scream for help, I waited for my hands to unswell and I pulled them out. I walked over to Home Depot and bought a telescoping retreiver.
I spent another 30 minutes and got the wrench out..but I had to use a piece of coathanger to knock the ratchet off and then I could pull the wrench out.
Lunch started at noon. I am just finished, its 2:30 PM, Luckily I worked Saturday and Sunday, so i could tell onlookers I was just tweaking and adjusting my turbocharger boost on my car...

On my 1971 250C, it was corrosion in the drivers door switch. I pulled on the pluger and twisted it a few time and it works now.

If I'd know they were that cheap, I'da bought new ones.
Mine have a vacuum switch in them to lock the seat backs when the engine is running and the doors are closed and I had to bust them open to make them work. What a PITA.

at that price its not worth the time to fiddle with old ones.

Try spraying some WD-40 on the door switch, if that doesn't work, steal one of your donor car and try spraying it with WD-40 first too...

For one, my dome lights wouldn't work, as well as a bunch of other things . Plus, without it, I would have a lot more rusty tools...
