Acceleration of a 3L turbo diesel

My friend had a used 3L turbo diesel engine in place of the old 2.4L diesel that expired in his 82 240D.

Should this engine have a lot better acceleration?

How much Hp did the 3L turbo engine make new?
How much Hp did the 2.4L non turbo engine make new?

It should zoom right on past 100 moh real easy, top end depending on gears and version of 300D engine, 110 to 120 mph.

It is MUCH faster. My car now keeps up with most cars on the road now, as opposed to not being able to get out of it's own way with the n/a engine.

I believe the horsepower difference is about double, from 60-70hp to 120hp or so.

Top Speed

Somewhere I think I read the top speed (at least on a 300SD - 84) was 106 mph.

I cruised mine at a 100 once. It still had some go in it. I don't know how much though. Maybe 110.

Flat ground on the freeway about 122 GPS, running decently, no egr, cool ambient outside temps.
Might be able to do better...that was just crusing for a few min.

Gets squirly here on oregon roads anything above 135 though becuase of the huge ruts and whatnot. (downhill)

Both my Owners Manual and my Technical Data Passenger Cars Apr 1985 states 240D is 67 HP 85 mph (approx) top speed. The 300D is 123 HP for Federal 300D Turbo with 105 top end for yr models '83 through '85 approx for automatic transmission cars.

What kind of engine is in your 300SD? Their is no way a 617 can push a W126 up to 122 or even 135. It does not rev high enough or have enough power. Someone who is better at math can probably figure out what rpm it would be running at 135 but probably way north of 5k. Heck a 98-99 E300D is good for about 135.

A 300SD is probably good for 105 maybe just south of 110. My SDL has a bit more power and is probably good for just under 120. But I have yet to test this.

I'll go run a 2nd test tonight
Gotta get a passenger to hold/read the GPS...I don't want to take my eyes off the road at that speed!

Dang, man. Take a video camera, and show us the GPS at speed!

Hattie,

his engine speed would be a few single digit rpms shy of 5K in top gear fully locked.

hehe...na
living in the same town since I was born, knowing almost all the cops by name and where they live, listening to the scanner whenever I am at home, being a high schooler last year, etc etc. I know how to not get caught breaking a law.
Besides, I never speed without a friend or two ahead to make sure I don't hit anything or whatnot...
suprisingly a safe driver heh
