603 oil change
 

I did an oil change on the 603 today. However, this time I took PEH advice and cracked the lower oil cooler line. I let the oil pan and the oil cooler line drain overnight with the cover cracked on the oil filter.

The amount of oil that drained from the cooler line was over 1 pint! The inside of the oil filter housing was perfectly dry, unlike previous oil changes.

After filling with 7.5 quarts and running the engine, the oil remains perfectly clean, unlike the past when it became immediately black from the residual oil in the cooler and the lines.

Just a word to the wise..................... :)

You played with the devil taking apart those 17 year old oil cooler lines! :D

My oil seems to stay pretty clean for the first few miles. But I guess draining everything couldn't hurt. But when I get my under body panals back on I will just suck it out the dipstick.

It's worse than you think. I did not have a large open end metric wrench for the fitting so I used a big crescent wrench.

I also did not have a thin enough metric wrench to hold the boss on the cooler. So, I just used the crescent wrench without holding the boss. :eek:

Gave it a good shot with my right hand and it broke loose immediately without ripping out the cooler!

Good job, I like the concept I think I will see how I can accomplish the same result on my 617.

Hmmm...what if you installed an in-line drain spigot/valve in the hose? Why all you'd have to do is open the spigot/valve and let it drain! How easy is that? :vbac47679

You could have swage fittings done by a pro and have a really nice set up making oil changes easy and as effective as you say!

Ahh the joy of owning a southern car! :D To get mine apart I had to pull the entire thing out of the car lines and all. Then I spent a few hours heating the fittings up with a butane tourch and hitting the wrench that was on them with a hammer. The heat and shock worked well the steel ends took the aluminum threads with them. New oil cooler and line time! :D $650

Just a warning to those of us with northern cars if the lines don't come right apart leave them alone!
