Do you LIKE the smell of diesel exhaust?

I appreciate it for what it is (an "exotic" smell, almost), but I'm one of those *rare* folks that is irritated by the exhaust. I ride my bicycle to and from work (offices housed in a 1700s tavern that fronts a major industrial roadway). We are located in an industrial area, thus, the front of the beige building is black with soot, and cleaned once a year. It's destroying the paint also.

On the way home in all of my .3 mile commute, I usually get passed by about 7-12 large trucks, or if there's bridge construction, have to go through a plume of dark smoke belched from the numerous cranes and front-end loaders and generators.

Each and every day, I hate diesels more and more and wish they'd all run bio, even if it prompts me to stop by McDonalds before turning onto my street. How can these guys work in such conditions? Perhaps they are used to it, but my eyes and throat hurt just about every afternoon because of this. The contact cannot be good for their lungs.

I LOVE it!

Dino diesel exhaust reminds me of the bitumenous smell of smoke from a coal-fired steam locomotive. Yum! I also like the 'hot frying pan' exhaust scent my cars have when running WVO. Of course, I'm not trying to inhale this stuff when pedaling a bike either.

Gassers OTOH, make my eyes hurt and generally stink to high heaven.

My wife likes the smell of diesel. Reminds her of being out at sea on an oil tanker. My kids think it's a bit stinky. Time to start thinking seriously about a little science project at home - brew some biodiesel for daddy's car.

I have always thought diesel smelled good much more apeasing than sitting behind some gasser at a light that is set real rich Lately with my new homemade fuel it's the aroma similar to the smell of deep frying a turkey in motor oil

Never have been a fan of any exhaust...except maybe nitro /alcohol, top fuel burners.

The TDI does not smell like the classic diesel of the 617 MB. It is much eaiser to take.

The wvo/rug blend reminds me a bit of a propane fork lift
but with a stronger veggie accent

I absolutely hate the smell of diesel exhaust. I'm glad it exits at the back of my car.

In small concentrations biodiesel smells much better, however don't fire up your new franken-benz on B100 in your garage to test it before you start rolling. Talk about a horrible fumigation -- my throat was raw for days. Of course diesel would have probably killed me.

Love it!

It reminds me of living in Belgium when I was a kid. It's particularly emotive on cold, rainy mornings, as Belgium always seemed... well, cold and rainy. And full of diesel fumes, of course!

I also love the smell of jet fuel. I could stand on the edge of the ramp all day when I am at Guard duty and take in the smell of KC-135's firing up, but that's more of a pride thing, I suppose.

Chris

I kind of like the smell of diesel exhaust, but not the partially unburned kind from a cold start or a poor running engine. But I also try not to inhale it because it's not very healthy. Exhaust from older gassers is a lot worse though. That unburned gasoline smell is as bad as death stench.

Please remember that stuff is TOXIC. Don't sniff too deeply!

It seems like lots of people have good memories of the smell from their pasts, and that makes sense.

I think biodiesel smells pretty good when it burns.. See the quote in my signature, it apparently smelled good enough to make my friend hungry. We went out for chips afterward.

peace,
sam
