Alda Adjustment For High Altitude

Does anyone know if the ALDA can be adjusted for high altitude use to get rid of excessive smoking ????

It is supposed to automatically adjust for altitude if working properly.

According to MB CD's for the 603 engine, the turbo makes up for the drop in atmospheric pressure by compressing the air enough through the turbo. Hence 13 psi is indeed 13 psi at 1,000 ft or 10,000 ft. It makes sense as the air is 13 real pounds per square inch at that altitude. 13 psi at higher altitudes would measure higher pressures at lower altitudes.

However, a considerable power loss off idle is apparent without the turbo engaged, naturally. The ALDA should regulate fuel and boost pressures enough to keep the smoke-limit to a minimum.

The only time I ever went to high altitudes, my car smoked very, very excessive. You could not see the car behind you until boost built. Come to find out the alda was bad. Worked fine in Louisiana and at any altitude under about 4000'. I did not worry about it at the time but when I recently had the injection pump overhauled, the shop said the alda was bad and that is what was causing the smoking problem. My boost was sufficient to mask the busted diaphram at low altitudes. It is fixed now, but the alda was the most expensive part of the overhaul!
