Shim the springs? This information could be useful as there are quite a few 123s around with sub standard rear height. Possibly easier and cheaper than changing out the springs. I thought there was a tab to measure to the frame from to establish if ride height was good? Perhaps another mercedes model?

I had axle shafts and a driveshaft support bearing all at the same time last year. I had the bearing done (was diagnosed by a dealer while I was on a long trip... decided to finish the trip and fix at home) BUT, the noise persisted (the old bearing was bad, FWIW). And, sadly, it was both rear axle shafts. dry and spent. Was happy to find a local guy who rebuilt them and just happened to have two for me, making the repair not quite as painful to the wallet.

Glad you found the problem- I think that my issues came from excess weight on the old old SLS which blew out the high pressure hose in the front. That dropped the fully loaded wagon-weight onto the axles, and I think that was the end of the 20 year old shafts at that point. didn't help the support bearing either. oh well. So much nicer to drive when it was fixed!

There was clear evidence they removed the clamps and put in lubricant. It was the wagon so they adjusted the hydraulic suspension components so that it was riding higher.

I hope they looked for and cleaned out any metal shavings before the filled the boot up with grease. Did they do the other side for good measure?

Don't know about the metal shavings but they did both sides. StarTech is a good indy. I asked them to replace the wheel bearing. They could have done that but told me they didn't want to since they thought it was the cv joints in the axle.

It's good that they did right by you. It's hard to find a shop that will do that now a days. The shop sounds like a keeper. If they are comptent like you say they are, then I would think they did clean it all out.
