Any experience running W126 300SD without Resonator?

As is evident by my other post this evening, my resonator is rusting through. Someone has suggested that others have gone without it without any problems. I am interested in hearing from anyone who has some personal experience with this.

I note that there is no replacement resonator for the California cars (mine is Federal), does this mean that they simply do without them? If so, this would give me much more confidence that I could do without mine.

Thanks!

Yes

The resonator is for sound tuning on the W126 OM617 turbo...
My exhaust down pipe, from manifold to center of car broke.
I drove without it for two days, there was roughly fifteen percent sound increase.
You do need a complete sealed exhaust to rear bumper, to prevent exhaust gasses entering the cabin.

It is certainly not my intention to simply remove it, but rather to by-pass it with a straight (okay, slightly bent) pipe. It was the smell of the leak itself that clued me into looking into the problem. My down pipe had a hole at the right side to center bend. I fixed that this evening. My initial drive seemed to have been quieter. The question for me remains, how much sound difference will there be without the resonator. Heck, what am I talking about - I've got a gapping hole there now, so the sound can't be much worse than it is now.

It will be much quieter (as compared to your 'holy' exhaust)
my car has a nice little growl around 2k when rolling around the parking garage and whatnot...
You will not notice the lack of reasonators apart from this resonant sound (and it is sorta nice!)
take them off and free up the exhaust...make sure it is propperly supported though...those resonators do have some "holding up" that they do.
Enjoy!

FWIW---

I just removed the resonator from my 1983 300TD wagon's exaust system, and have noticed absolutely no change in sound or performance. Just whacked in a nice new piece of straight pipe. There's my .02

Not a diesel but basically the same exhaust, I removed the resonator because it was rusting from my 560SEL. Little deeper tones, thats about it. Put two straight pipes in place of it.

I can take a picture of it if you like.

resonator

i removed that back muffler or whatever it is called on my 90 350sdl. it is louder. i occasionally am embarressed by the sound but it is ok from the inside of the car. at some engine speeds it is louder. i waver and might put the muffler back on. i was looking for better mileage and didnt mind the extra sound. i am not sure it helped the mileage. i get 26 running 75 to 80.

i did the same thing on my 84 500sec and am very happy with that... no regrets. it rumbles on backoff. my wife doesn't get it. i wanted to hear that big v8. this did increase mileage .5 to one mpg, i think.

John - did you have to fabricate a custom pipe to replace the resonator or does someone already offer it? I'm looking at replacing my entire exhaust system and wouldn't mind a slightly throatier sound and a cheaper price.

Mine was rusted right where the pipes join the resonator.
I cut off as much was needed of the rust and had two 18" pipes from autozone and with the entire exhaust off the car, welded them in place.

I have to admit, that 560 motor with only head pipes on it sounds so badass lmao! Of COURSE I had to start it up with no exhaust on!

went out and snapped some pics real quick. not the best angle, but part of the driveway has a steep angle so these should give you an idea for now.
