vacuum pump rebuild question

Hey,
I should be getting my rebuild kit on Friday. I was reading the directions and was wondering about this:

Quote:
The book said I could remove the piston with a special pair of pliers but I had to remove the rod and spring assembly and then push the piston out the top. Note that in February ’83 the piston design was changed. Pictures are in the book, but it is no big deal. The later piston has a lower skirt.
I thought you just put the new gasket and relief valves in the top and put it back together. Why would you want to remove the whole piston?
Also since I have an '84 I should have the newer design, what problem may I find with this?
And last what book is he talking about? I have a Chilton and a Haynes and neither one tells how to repair them.
Actually they both suck but that's another story.

Thanks

Danny

If you open up that top and you have a big or little split in the rubber diaphram then you have the option of just putting it back with a good one...
if your if that is not your problem then you will need to deal with the rest of the stuff...
Mine was fixed in my 1980 240 by just putting in the diaphram...

Did you do a search ? There is a LOT of good info about this.... and I know I have posted pictures of mine being fixed....

Since I just got finished with this job on my 240D, I will shed some light on this subject. The pumps used to be diaphram pumps, but they were changed in 1981 or 1982 to a piston design. So you should have the piston design. The rebuild kit will include o-rings that fit onto the piston and act as the seal (piston ring). In order to change the piston o-rings you have to unbolt the piston rod from the piston. The piston is little more than a flat plate bent on the sides to accept the o-rings. The instructions talk about a new design piston that has a longer skirt or something, which is an inconsequential detail when doing the rebuild. My piston came out easily after I unbolted the rod, which protrudes through the piston. The wooden plate that the instructions recommend is well worth the minimal effort required to fabricate it. It helps both in the safe disassembly of the pump and in reassembly.

...and also the book being referred to is obviously the factory shop manual, which I do not have. The Haynes manual does not help in this repair.

Good luck!

How much did your kit cost? Is it a simple procedure in putting it together?

Rebuild kits for the piston type pump are $72 on Fast Lane. Performance Products (and probably many others) also sell these kits. The diaphram rebuild kits go for about half of the price of the piston kits.

Since you have an 84 you will have the new piston type vacuum pump.
Look at this link for a detailed description of the rebuild.
To remove the piston it is synply a matter of removing a nut and pushing out the piston. You remove the piston to replace the skirt ring.
