Need ideas on what MB to look for.

Hello,
My sister just got married and I let her take my 85 300SD along with her. Now I need another Mercedes! I have only driven the 300SD so I really don't know what the others are like which is why I am asking opinions from those of you that have driven 126's and 124's.
What I want is a car that I can drive on long trips comforatbly, get really good fuel milege, has good power and is economical to maintain, simple enough for an average guy like me to work on, I am fairly comfortable with working on engines as well as maintenence.
I really liked the 300SD, the only improvements I can think of are. It is a bit loud, I would like better fuel economy, I would like more power, especially on take off, the SD was a little pathetic in my opinion. I liked the simplicity but a little more refinement would be nice. I would like to check out the newer (87) 300D and 300SDL. I read the 300D with the 6 cyl. diesel is fast, which I like. What kind of fuel milege would I expect? The SDL is nice too but is it that much better than the SD? How would it compare to the SD and the 300D in fuel milege and power? How are the newer 6 cyl. to work on?
90% of my driving would be highway. Easy cold starting is a big plus! Price is a big factor as well.
Anyway, any suggestions? Thanks
