ATF+4 in a W123?

I plan to change the tranny fluid and filter in my car this weekend. Is ATF+4 fluid compatible with a 20 year old trans? My understanding is that +4 carries newer cleaners(detergents).

I cant see of any harm coming off an oil which has better cleaning, would help to keep your tranny running cleaner and therefore chances of less deposits can only add to the reliability.

sip,

BUT, the new detergents might damage the seals like it does in the power
steering pumps. You won't know until you try it.

I would go with the Mobil 1 synthetic trans fluid as many here use it with no problems, and it's about the best you can buy.

Thanks very much. I'll give the Mobil 1 a try.

I fully agree, if you can shell out the extra money, M-1 ATF is absolutely the best and M-1 gear lube is the best for the diff. Have used it extensively in most of the vehicles I have used and can tell you it is worth every dollar you spend.

Do you have a source for ATF+4 other than a Chrysler dealer?

Daimler Chrysler is the only source that I have for +4. Sorry.
