I got the old chain routed through the crank sprocket and back up again. Equal lengths coming out on both sides.

I found a broken piece of chain rail.

It was wedged in the chain and crank sprocket, on the driver side of the engine. It's most likely part of the inner or outer slide rail. It might have actually broken off from that wedge of chain that was jamming up the injection pump gear. Definately the outer slide rail.

Another order.

I wonder how critical it is to have that top 1/2 inch of that outer sile rail?

Somewhat less critical than not having the broken bit in the chain, at least!

I've known mechanics to cut off the part of the rail that breaks off in the 380/420 engines when installing it so that it won't drop into the chain case with no problems.

Must have been the plastic one.

the open end of a clip on a clip type master link should always be on the trailing side of the link......now if that clip is on the front of rear of the motor.....I would assume front but then thats only an assumption.

Yes, It's the outside one of the pair just below the IP gear. Just the top inner pert broke off. The plastic is not discolored and looks in new condition.

The head is on and torqued down!

Amazingly, when I pulled the old chain through and rotated the engine to TDC, the broken section was at the top.

Now I have to put on:

Rocker arms and brackets
Chain tensioner
New timing chain
Oil pump chain
Exhaust manifold
Intake manifold
Turbocharger
Injection pump
Oil filter housing
Vacuum pump
Valve cover
Air filter housing, etc

Between the raindrops today, I got the timing chain, chain tensioner, intake, exhaust and turbocharger hooked up. As well as the injection pump, power steering pump and fuel filter.

That leaves:

Rocker arms and brackets
Oil pump chain
Oil filter housing
Vacuum pump
Valve cover
Air filter housing, etc

Damn, damn, damn! I leaned too hard and broke the nipple from the radiator to the expansion tank.

Is this a small plastic nipple? I have seen a repair done with a barb fitting. Cut the nipple off flush, drill a hole and thread in the barb fitting. Drill by hand, a motor is too much.

That's exactly what I was thinking of doing. Glad to see someone else had successfully done the same.

BTW, I ground the rivet end off and broke my oil pump chain in two.

The book says not to use a master link but an endless chain because the connecting link may rub against the timing chain or oil pan.

I'm assuming that this is only because at that time they used clips, which made the link wider. A crimp type would be no wider than the original.

Comments?

Tonight I got the oil filter housing, vacuum pump, turbo oil feed, thermostat housing, and injector nozzel plates installed.

Starting to snow now. Supposed to get up to 12 inches.

Still to do:

Rocker arms and brackets
Oil pump chain
Air filter housing
Power steering pump
Valve adjustment
Valve cover
Fix broken radiator to expansion tank hose

Michael, the oil pump chain comes endless, do not cut it in any way. You can get the new chain on by removing the oil pump. Although at first it looks like it will never happen, with the chain already over the crank sprocket, the oil pump with sprocket can be tilted into the chain and bolted up. I cleaned the mating surfaces of the block and oil pump with alcohol, and coated with a thin layer of hylomar sealant (which I got at NAPA - I really like this stuff) before I bolted back up. I had my upper oil pan removed though, if you are keeping it on, this may not work the same. Whatever you do, PLEASE don't make the stupid mistake I did and let the oil pump sprocket bolt get loose - that was a real mess!

The oil pump chain is already broken apart. I took the pump off and I could not get the chain off the sprocket no matter which way I tried to tilt or move it.

Phil at Fastlane was able to find a chain with a link for me. I should have it today or tomorrow.

They used to be endless because only C-clip style connecting limks were available. That type of connecting link is wider to accomodate the clip and thus may rub against the timing chain or pan. The new crimp style link remains the same width as the chain so there is no possibility of rubbing. Apparently they sell the chain with a press link.
