602 running rough no power

Hi all,

I am the proud new owner of a 1990 300D 2.5 with 200,000 miles on the clock. Just purchased it over the weekend and drove it to Minnesota. It was able to cruise OK at 80 mph with more room under the gas pedal, but here is the first problem, it takes forever to get there. From a standing start this thing is agonizingly slow. I don't think the turbo is coming on at all. Coming out af a rest area onto the highway requires flooring the gas pedal and it is still accelerates so slowly. When doing 70 MPH the speed reduces when I get to a slight incline, flooring it only causes it to kick down and rev to about 4500rpm at 55 - 60 mph. It will not pickup speed until I get over the hill or incline. Surely this can't be right. I know it is not supposed to be as fast as a 300E but this is insane.

There is also a loud tapping sound coming from the top area of the engine. Not the normal diesel clatter. This noise diminishes somewhat when I loosen the fuel line to number 1 injector. Bad injector? The noise vanishes at around 1200rpm
The engine also misses a lot at idle, it is not smooth at all, runs like a gas engine with a bad plug, however at high revs it is as smooth as glass. I changed the oil with rotella synthetic and replaced the air filter, it looked like it had been on the car since day one. I also removed the intake pipe from the turbo to the intake side of the engine and it was thick with oily soot and carbon deposits . I will clean it tomorrow morning and see if it makes a difference. I started the car with the connecting pipe out and it still ran rough, also I was expecting a rush of air from the turbo, but got nothing. Can I disable the EGR on this model. I have read and searched the archives about disabling the EGR but found nothing for this year. Searches have revealed a lot of info I need to fix the minor stuff, thanks to all previous posters.

One last question, one of the return fuel lines on number 5 injector has been capped off. Is this normal or was this done by one of the previous owners?

I sure would apprecite help on these issues

Thanks.
