What can you swap a 617 turbo into?

Hi everyone,

Long time, no see...

As many know, my 83 300D was destroyed by an inatentive girl who caused a 4 car pileup on my birthday (Jul 30th). I loved that car, and havent gotten rid of it yet. I still love that car, and although I am the proud owner of a beautiful brand new saab 9-3, it still breaks my heart to see old 'stinkies' going around.

Im thinking of what to do with the car, I cant have it in my apartment parking lot forever. Ill post about that in the for sale/want to buy later.

The thing is, I am considering my options. The car has 228k on it. The last time I started it was in early September, and today, after glowing it for only the duration of two glow lights being on, it started and caught on the first cylinder and ran perfectly. I feel like the engine is worth keeping.

The problem is, its hard to find a nice, immaculate w123 close and with a blown engine but nothing else wrong.

So I am considering what to do. Can anyone tell me where else I can put a 617 (besides a w126)? I was thinking it would be neat to have a fintail 300D.

I would have to pay a professional or enthusiast to do the work, but would be willing to heavily consider doing something with the rest of the car, either swap all the great parts into another, or do something special and fun.

How possible would it be to swap the 617 into a newer 350 SDL? the one that beds rods? Im sure it would be really slow, but thats OK. I want to maximize my possibilities.

Thanks for all your help,

JMH

You could consider a W114 or a W116 since both were available as diesel models, the later 114's had a non-turbo 5 cyl and the 116's had the turbo engine but your engine has a few more HP's than the one the 116's had. It could be a simple bolt in project and either car could probably be found for cheap.

You are welcome to swap it into my garage if that qualifies as a swap.

There have been a number of swap threads. One guy put a 616 in a Land Rover.

I would like to have a diesel 4x4.
