617 Turbo re-sealing

1985 300D 617 turbo. Turbo part number on tag is 002-096-75-99
The turbo has good boost pressure, but leaks oil from the rear plate. (side facing the firewall).
Has anyone had any success with replacing this seal, or am I better off having it rebuilt?
R&R of the turbo is straight forward, and with it functioning properly, I assume there would be no need for waste gate adjustment.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
I am not sure if the turbo is a Garrett or KKK.
Alan

It's leaking oil out of the back side of the turbo through the exhaust? Sure it's not the oil return tube that's leaking? That's the usual oil leak at the turbo, at least the one that you can normally see. If it is leaking out the exhaust side of the turbo you probably need to find a good shop to rebuild it or find a bearing cartridge that fits and do it yourself.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the turbo is leaking out of the exhaust side, around the outer edge. There are several bolts holding the rear plate on, and I think there is a bearing seal, as mentioned.
I replaced the wastegate hose thinking this is where the problem was, but there is clear evidence of oil around the above mentioned area.
The turbo is a KKK, separate wastegate with adjusting screw protruding out towards fender. Alan

Yeah, pretty sure you will need to rebuild it to fix that. If you have access to a digital camera I would appreciate a pic of it, I've never seen a KKK and have wondered what the differences are in the way they look.
