I'd be very careful of how you mod your CC to the U-tube. I've had one 240D runaway on me. (Actually my son, I wasn't there) All it took was about 30-40 seconds to make that engine toast.

Plasti-dip can be bought at Lowes or Home Depot. In the paint adhesive section.
Here is a picture of the unit in the car. Dave Compare this to the post I have above http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/attachment.php?attachmentid=22250 Pasti-dip http://www.plastidip.com/consumer/index.html |
mplafleur,
What was the cause of the runaway? RT |

IF its of ANY relevence, the CCV of my BMW, is directly from the cam-box to a point Just Before (Around 2") before the Turbo Inlet.....
BMW Made the thing that way...... No 'Oil Separators', Just a shaped 1" bore rubber pipe, from cam-box to a junction with the air-pipe at the turbo inlet...... As far as I know there is NO other Breather or vent for the crank-case on the BMW M51 engine.... An engine in good condition should have very little 'blow-by' gasses to expell oil anyway--Oil wont be 'sucked out' the crank-case by the Turbo! If the engine has got to the point that blow-by is pressurising the crank-case, and expelling oil with the standard breather set up, then oil could be forced passed the rings and a run-away could occur...BUT thats because the engine is knackered anyway, its just not stopped kicking yet! (And YES, I have suffered a 'Runaway' Diesel-A Land-Rover 2.5-But that is because the engine was stuffed anyway!--God THAT was FUN:eek: ) |
So what do you suggest?
I removed my air filter housing years ago when the oil seporator housing went bad. in its place i installed a cone style filter directly on to the turbo housing. I love the setup you can hear the turbo spool...
the problem was there was no place for the CC to vent. so i installed a section of hose that poined strait to the ground. just like the vents on a 50s chevy...... (i know i'm gonna catch crap for that coment.) anyway. about 3 months ago i got really tierd of polishing up my MERCEDES-BENZ and having this mystical cloud of smoke come from under the car!!!! very trashy looking... so in an effort to clean up my image in routed my crank case gasses into my intake. i don't like this setup ether. i'd realy like ot have an oil seporator in the mix... so what do you guys suggest? |

I had a drop vent like yours and a cop stopped me at the airport curb where you unload passengers, said something about a fire in my engine? I said no its just a diesel (and hurried out of there!) I got tired of the smell too. Made a conversion like yours I presume (although not an SD)
You need a 240D oil/air separator. Like this, mounted in my '79 300TD w/ '85 turbo engine: |

For all the OM60x people:
The valve cover has a built in oil seperater. I recently had a problem where it's filled with sludge, and not working. Lets just say that the turbo dosnt like oil in the intake. |

Sludge!! Thats a big cavity! After 250k+ miles mine was perfectly clean, well except for a little oil residue that coats everything. How long have you been stretching out those oil changes? I see your car has about 410k miles on it, thats probably all highway? The inside of that engine should be spotless. |

Is the EGR letting crud get pulled into the intake? How did your crossover look? You should be running synthetic oil in the 603 what with hydraulic lifters. Synthetic oil won't leave any sludge. |
