Need help today!
I have goofed up something. I have just gotten the 1982 300sd back from the mechanic. He put in new vacuum valves on top of the valve cover. He checked vacuum at modulator and injection pump shift valve, adjusted modulator 2 turns, and the car was shifting beautifully. It was smooth. You didn't hear or even feel first or second shift. You could put foot to the floor from a stop and she would smoothly shift into all three gears and take off!
Degreased my engine Friday with degreaser and hot water from a low pressure garden hose (not a pressure washer). Now when I really put my foot into it from a stop, she is holding back from shifting into 2nd gear until the engine revs to 4000RPM. Then if I keep my foot in the floor, she revs again to 3500-4000 RPM before shifting. Once in third gear, she runs fine, but it is like the engine is reved up beyond normal and shift is delayed and has lost that smoothness it had. No vac lines loose. Got under car and checked vac line to green colored valve on driver side on tranny and not loose. Don't understand what happened.

Check your bowden cable, I don't think the vacuum lines have anything to do with how the car will shift.

Ouch!
You dislodged or broke a vacuum line while cleaning.
You need to trace every vacuum line under the hood, and find out where it is not connected. Check the vacuum pump line, if it came off or cracked it will act as you describe. The issue is lack of vacuum. It worked before washing. No function after washing. The Bowden cable is not affected by washing.

Thank you
Thank you for that insight. One other question - the switchover valve on top of the valve cover that the mechanic replaced - could that produce this effect? The first one he installed was defective and he installed a second one. Was just curious. I did take off the cover and look at the valve. He had replaced several of the small hoses on it with new light blue colored ones. None of these were loose.

Make sure that your mechanic put back the vacuum lines in there right holes of the switch-over valve. I had the same symptoms and than discovered that inadvertently, I had put one of the vacuum lines back into a non-functioning hole. (If remember correctly, there are several non-functioning holes)
