Exclamation 300D starter lockout and B/U light adjustment???

this has me confused! My 78 300D won't start occasionally. I can jiggle the gear selector and start it....Sometimes other times nothing. I've checked the plug and connections that I know of. In my manual the steps are clear:
1. Disconnect the selector rod and move the selector lever on the transmission to position Neutral.
2. Tighten the clamping screw prior to making Adjustments.
3. Loosen the adjusting screw and insert the locating pin through the driver into the locating hole in the shift housing.
4. Tighten the adjusting screw and remove the locating pin.
5. Move the selector Lever to position N and connect the selector rod so that there is no tension.
6. Check to make sure that the engine CANNOT be started in Neutral or Park.

Okay so after this so called adjustment, Where does the selector have to be to start my car??????

Is this adjustment a waste of my time and should I just go out and buy a new switch? Might as well since my reverse lights haven't worked since I bought the rig.
Is there a way to hotwire this switch for now till I get a new one so I don't have to walk everywhere????
Any help is appreciated....I am just very frusterated from being stranded!!!!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
