sloppy shifter in 220D

The shifter in my 1969 220D is sloppy. It's dificult to get it into and out of reverse, and moving through the gears is guesswork at best.

Other than the shifter, the trans seams to be OK.

Is the shifting mechanism serviceable, or would it require a trans tear down?
