sloppy shifter in 220D
The shifter in my 1969 220D is sloppy. It's dificult to get it into and out of reverse, and moving through the gears is guesswork at best.
Other than the shifter, the trans seams to be OK. Is the shifting mechanism serviceable, or would it require a trans tear down?

Well, I can't answer your question but when I saw the subject of the thread I had to look. My father bought a used low mileage 1969 220D in 1969 from a dealer in DC. I remember one day we were at a stop sign in VA in about 1976 and he went to put it in gear and the shifter broke off in his hand. He was just holding the handle that was now disconnected from the car. He was not amused. I had a pretty poor impression of Mercedes quality ever since. So I guess all I can tell you is if you get it worked on and they suggest a new shifter handle, go for it!!

Column or floor shift??
The reason for this problem is always the same.... piss-poor driving habbit of constantly resting the right hand on the shift lever while driving. Probably the original owner who softened up the bushings by never letting go of the shifter and treating it like a hand rest. Underneath there are rubber bushings that are easy to replace. If it's column shift, then there are nylon sockets forward of the firewall that will need to be replaced. My guess is the tranny is okay, but it would be good idea to get an experienced MB tech to install linkage bushings - because rod lengths might require fine adjustment after all the abuse they've seen. |

That transmission has an external linkage, and the problem is worn out bushings in the linkage by the the shift lever. Lots of little parts and an PITA, but doable.
There is nothing at all wrong with the tranny, the shift lever is not operaiting the correct shift links due to wear. Peter
