mystery fluid leak

Went out to start Annie up and noticed there is some fluid of some sort lookin' like it's weeping from the metal fitting on the hose going to the A/C compressor. The fluid is slippery and kinda light amber/yellow/orange colored. I looked as hard as I could considering it's like 2 degrees outside and I was freezing but could see no other source for the leak. Any ideas?

Well, if it is orange colored, it might be power steering fluid. However, this is normally more toward the red hue because it is transmission fluid. It is in the general location, however.

It could also be coolant if it is yellow/amber colored if you are using the Xerex G-05, however, there are no coolant hoses near the a/c hose IIRC.

Probably best to check it in daylight and at a warmer temperature.

A bit too difficult to diagnose by wire.

Hmmm. Roger that. I was just wondering if the A/C compressor hoses even conducted fluid really, but I 'm probably on crack and you are laughing at me. Now I know it's most likely something dripping onto the fitting on the hose, making it appear as though the fitting itself was the culprit! I need to get a really good look at it to really tell.

Well, you might be on crack, but, I never laugh at anybody. As an old ferry boat captain, we always had a statement on compatriots who ran a boat aground. Never laugh at someone who ran aground because you could easily (with one lapse of attention) be next.

Definitely.

A/C systems often have a dye added to the refrigerant so if you have an A/C leak the oil will come out with an unusual color.

Yes, dye is often used for a/c leak diagnosis, however, it is RARE to see a/c oil dripping. If the leak is that bad, you can be rest assured that the system is bone dry. I fully expect that the leak is another fluid that is finding its way along the hose.

Hope this helps,
