Legendary Engines....OM617

Don't know how many of you read Classic and Sports Car or Thoroughbred and Classic Cars magazine, but they occasionally have a feature called "Legendary Engines" in which they do a 2-3 page spread about some powerplant that in some way changed the automotive world, whether it be in racing, design, or even plain old simplicity. I think we need to lobby to get them to include the Mercedes OM617 turbodiesel engine in that feature. Sure, it might not be as pleasing to the eye as a Jaguar XK engine or as a Ferrari V12, but hey, they did a feature on the BMC B-series engine (of MGB and Morris fame) which isn't exactly a "beauty" either. How many votes to I have to send off a letter indicating our praise of this fine lump of German iron?

I think its a good idea....

Yeah- nothing sounds quite like 5 cylinders for one good reason!

rs899 12-23-2004 07:11 AM

Sure- add my name to the list. Especially when you consider how many of these engines routinely last over a million miles according to ebay sellers.

some recognition is definately overdue.how about the enviormentalists award for better design, engineering and compassion for the ozone layer? :D

Don't forget the C-111. The OM617 broke some speed records. This is the engine's claim to fame.

Here is a link to an article:

Bravo! Mercedes Man, that's a great link!

I'd get a kick out of seeing a multi-page article on Mercedes diesels in a car magazine (other than Diesel Car Mag.).

Yes!

Spo says so. :D
Happy Holidays to all!
Lets keep those diesels firing... :)
Best wishes always,
Spo out

Are there any diesel car magazines in existence? While I haven't quite embarked on a search for one, I'd be stunned to hear of any that are sold in North America.

Yup! In Europe, they're treated to a wonderful publication called Diesel Car Magazine. The subscription is somewhere around $100/year to get it in the US.

You have my vote as well. No other engine has the combination of durability, economy, and power. The OM 617.952 with a few tweaks, set some world records for speed and fuel economy in the C-111.

Gurkha 12-24-2004 09:03 AM

My vote as well but I would also like to add the OM 616 in the list if possible, what is creditable is that IMHO, this is the hardest working 2.4L 65bhp 4 on earth, it has been used and is still being used in LCV rated for 3.5 tons but regularly overloaded to 5 tons and still manage to survive for over 300,000Km with poor maintenance and really bad quality fuel and oil.
