conn the exhaust bypass valves are marketed for use on the "track" and in the state of fl a turbo is not considered a sufficient muffler but whose going to notice when youve got lifted F250's running 4 inch pipe from the headers back and the sherrif in his truck is right with em

That's the bottom line. When I get the chance this fall, straight pipes and a resonator.

Is there a standard?

If the car isn't too loud and you get called on it go to a junkyard and get a resonator off something and tell them its a muffler. They would have to cut it open to prove it isn't.

Edit : Note, exhaust bypass valves aren't legal in some states either.
Is there a standard or a db limit in any of the laws that might apply to this issue that anyone knows of? I've noticed a lot of Harley's running around that are plenty loud.

My 92 Cummins Turbodiesel truck has just a straight pipe out of the turbo and no muffler. Sounds like a freightliner, and it is kind of loud cruising at freeway speed up a grade, but that's the way it came when I bought it and i haven't been annoyed enough to put a muffler back on it.

It does set off car alarms in the city...

What exactly would Exhaust brakes do to the "haul-down" for a mercedes???
I have a couple Cut out valves, if any one wants ONE. I want the other
the electrically operated ones are super cool, don't need to cut a hole in the floor for a cable, though I don't mind having that instant "Bllaaaap" effect right at hand

I'm SERIOUSLY considering Manderel bent 2.75 or even 3 straights for my OM617....I NEED to hear that turbo...

You won't hear that turbo much. They are pretty quiet as far as turbo whine. I can only hear my K26 at idle and less than 3psi boost.

Exhaust brakes won't do much with an automatic because it does not have a locking torque converter. You would also have to keep it bolow 30psi without upgrading the exhaust valve springs. In any case, I'm sure it's better than nothing.

Anything bigger than 2.5" is pretty much a waste unless you have other power mods (intercooler, tweaked fuel settings, etc..

Quiet my arse. I've been running around with no exhaust for a while now, only thing there is the downpipe from the manifold (sits right under the driver seat I think). The turbo whine is ridiculous, sounds like a bigrig and it screams under full load. The engine itself is surprisingly quiet aruond town though. The resonation on the highway is pretty bad around 60-65 mph but with my Ipod in you dont notice. And at 70 and onwards it is remarkably quiet.

Quiet is a relative thing. Relative to the driver and where the exhaust exits the car. A straight pipe led to the rear bumper will be MUCH quieter than a downpipe dumping exhaust right at the floorboards. I have a 4" straight through muffler on my diesel pickup. It was way too loud running just the muffler and having it dump under the bed. Did this just to see when I installed the exhaust. Putting the tailpipe on directed the sound out and away from the truck so that you hardly hear it in the cab. I can assure you it is quite loud if you are behind the truck.

Best choice would be a Flowmaster and 2.5" or 3" mandrel bent pipe for a MB. Plenty of flow and retaining the dignity of the MB.

I have a muffler issue, its all rusted and about to fall off, so I am going to remove it soon, but I need to know, should I go with a straight pipe, or should I go pipe to the rear, with a flowmaster or something to cut on some of the sound (I want it to be loud and powerful sounding) Right now I have a pretty big hole in the pipe going into the resonators, and I like the "grrrowwlll" that it has when I take off, and I don't notice anything on the freeway (I'm probably just used to it)

I'm definatley not using an OEM setup, no $$ for that, its between straight pipe, and straight pipe + flowmaster to muffle some sound/add rumble

Any opinions?

Flowmaster is a restrictive muffler for gassers and is terrible for turbo engines.

I'd go straight pipe or find a Straight Through Muffler like the ones used on diesel pickup kits.

Any brands or specific mufflers you'd recommend? How bad is the straight pipe in volume with a 617? I have a video of a 603 with one, and it sounds pretty sweet.... I am also trying to stay as cheap as possible....
