91 300D 2.5 Turbo Diesel

Hi all, Hope everyone had a great Christmas.
I just aquired the above car with aprox 275K miles on it. Got it cheap with a trans problem which I will ask about when I take delevery of the car and can check it out. I want to use it as a daily driver but I want to address any known issues before I put it on the road.
I will change all fluids, replace or repair brakes as needed, and any other maintaince that looks needed. What should I look out for? Any thing I need to do other than checking chain stretch? I have read about some of these engines breaking the oil pump chain but some people say don't worry while others say do it at 250K miles or sooner. The vacuum pump was just changed a few months ago and the Injection pump was replaced last year. Any thing else I need to check?

Thanks everyone.
I hope each of you had a Christmas you will never forget and will have a New Year you can't remember.

I own a 92 300D 2.5 with 171k on it and have a few insights:

1. Timing Chain - If you aren't sure of the age of the chain, I would replace it. Measuring the stretch of the chain on the OM602 is a bit more involved than the OM617. I replaced mine at 150k, even though it was measuring less than 2deg of stretch.

2. Oil pump Chain - Asked my mech. about it and he'd never done one on one of these, so I ignored it.

3. Vacuum pump - Glad to hear that it was swapped out recently.

4. Belt Tensioner - make sure it is parallel with the plane of the serp. belt. If it's angled, replace it. Not a bad job - I did my vacuum pump, tensioner, and water pump all in one shot.

Other things to consider would be the condition of the radiator and thermostat. These engines run hotter than I thought they would and mine used to shoot up to 100C+ after running up a good hill. Once I replaced the rad and thermostat it never crosses 100C and settles back to 85C within a few minutes. I've been running Mobil 1 15w-50 (red cap) and have had good success. The oil pressure is much better with the 50 in it as opposed to the 0w-40 at least a half a bar at idle.

Hope this helps. I love mine.

Chris

Thanks for the reply Dhris.

I talked with the seller today and found out that about 2 years ago or about 20,000 miles ago the timing chain, guides, vacuum pump, injection pump, oil pump and chain and verious and assorted other things were replaced. I serviced it today along with a transmission service and found nothing out of order. Now the reason I got it cheap was because of a transmission problem (which I knew about). It won't shift out of first gear. I disconnected the kickdown valve (didn't help) and then replaced the valve (didn't healp). The trans pan didn't have any parts or metal or anything. It was as clean as any I have seen but the oil was light brown instead of red which means to me that the pan hadn't been off in a while.
Do you have any thoughts on this trans problem?
I have read where some people have used Trans-X with good success. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Well, you've checked out the cheap and cheerful fix, so it's time to take it to the MB aware tranny shop and talk valve body. Most likely it's a stuck valve, but could also be a broken accumulator, and this cannot be fixed short of some dissasembly. It can be diagnosed by checking the operating pressures in the tranny by someone who knows how.

This problem has been cured by a valve body replacement on some cars here on the forum, so it's worth checking out. Cheaper than a rebuilt tranny, anyway.

It's most likely either a bad governor or a stuck shift valve, and Trans-X won't do a thing for that.

Oil Pump Chain

P.M.(Etc.),

It is not a "Fun Job" you have to loosen motor mounts and raise engine
(maybe remove underbody crossmember...issues with windscreen cracking?)
to remove the oil pan.

BUT at that milage replacing the chain, sprockets and any guide rails is cheap
insurance .

If the O.P. chain fails with any R.P.M. s on the engine it can be the "KISS
OF DEATH".
