74 240D. Gem or rock?

On my way home today I saw a 74 240D for sale in a used car lot. It caught my eye cause it was so damn beautiful. No scrathes, dings, dents or anything. Interior was almost immaculate. No rust underneath. Engine looked clean, almost too much so.
It started up with a little effort with some black smoke, but then idled white. I took it for a spin, transmission seemed nice, but still smoked white. Is that serious? He wanted $2800 but when I said it still smoked too much, he said $2200. No records come from the car, but he said they got it at a local dealership who someone traded it in for.
Cant seem to located the VIN number. Just a bunch of numbers inside. Any suggestions? What else should I look for?

not too many, i just fueled up at the 66 at 4th and Griegos and talked to another MB head, but it's so croweded there you have to get outta the way for otheres or risk a "drive-by"... you know.
i was thinking of posting something here to see how many of "us" there are around here and get together for a taco or something.
what part of town do you work? i "work" for the city at the aeropuerto.

I work on base parttime and go to school full time at UNM. It would be cool if there were others dieselheads around here. Most of my tools are back home!

charro,
you don't know what you've gotten yourself in for... offering to buy me tacos... i'm a human garbage disposal, i'm taco/or pizza eating machine, a large pizza is an appitizer, like that ol Doors song "i can eat more chicken than any man ever seen"...
really, maybe we should arrange a GTG. I'm gonna do a new thread right now and see if i can chase up some more food.

Boxscar sounds like you can eat. I'll keep the Corona's and that hot Hatch Valley Chile ready for you. GTG sounds like a plan.
