No turnover cranking

In this cold weather, my glow plug light will light but the engine will not crank. The battery seems fine and I may have one glow plug that needs replacing....but shouldn't it turnover? Last winter as I recall, I have a similar problem and I replaced a couple of bad glowplugs. Question is, is one bad glowplug enough to stop the car from cranking? Thanks.

I would first take a 27mm (1 1/16") deep socket on the crankshaft, you can do it without removing anything, be sure to turn it over by hand clockwise.

this is just to insure that your not really siezed up.

I would put a good car battery charger on there, depending on the amperage, wait a while, then try to crank it over.

50 amps = at least one hour

25 amps = at least 2 hours

10 amps = overnight

2 amp trickle = at least one week

Thats what I would try... anyone else?

The GP will not keep it from turning over. You either dont have enough juice in the battery or the starter is out.

right, the glow plugs and starter do not control each other. Check to see if the starter is really drawing any current.

hope this link shows up, I've never tried to post one : www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/ProductDisplay/s-10101/p-469/c-10101 this is similar to an item I got from jc whitney about 20 years ago. Mine works great. I don't expect miracles for accuracy, but it sure is handy. All you have to do is place it next to the wire and the current reads out. No disconnecting of wire is necessary!

Check the battery cable connections as well, both on the battery and on the starter. If a cable is lose it can make all the difference.

It's the simple things to look for!

When my son told me the diesel wouldn't start, I assume the cold weather in the northeast had something to do with it. So I went through my routine of checking the battery (seems fine), and the glow plugs and waited for the weather to warm up. As we live on a flat driveway, I never checked the shift lever...and sure enough, it was on drive. So after spending 2 days of waiting for warm weather and, 2 hours reading posts and charging Judy for 6 hours....my last post read was, "make sure the car is in park or drive" and I dashed out to realize my oversight...thanks, everybody!

Remove terminals from battery, clean battery and cable, reinstall.
Check ground cable from body to engine is intact and not loose.

Remove battery, take to local parts-R-us or Sears for testing, recharge or replace as needed.

Also try putting transmission in neutral for starting.

Oh, if the battery is over four years old, I would junk it.

2nd person in a week on this board to fall victim to this problem. I suspect there is a 'transmission position' virus being passed around via diesel fuel.
