Son of a... :(

I ask you..

What good is it haveing a diesel, which needs basicaly NO electricity to function, if the same belts that drive the alternator drive the stinking WATER PUMP!? GRR..

First time I have ever had bearings go bad on the road with a Bosch alternator. First time in over a decade I have ever had to leave my car somewhere and catch a ride home and to work. If I was in a VW I'd remove the belt and have driven home.

Yes it has 278K on the original alt, yes they were nice enough to run double belts on it, but darn-it...

Oh well..

What's the problem? You park the car, crack open the alternator and pour a little oil on the bearings. Back on the road in an hour and probably good across the next couple states. Drop in an alternator shop and get some new parts. That alternator proved itself, don't give up on it now.

If it was really an emergency you could probably just dump some oil on the frozen alt pulleys and let the belt slip on them. That would get you to the next town. May have to slack the belts and re-oil them every few miles.

There are really too many solutions to this one to get into. If that problem beats your car, it beat you first. Don't let it beat you.

I thank God those days are behind me now. I hope he is listening.

Thats the exact same thing that happened to my dad's 83 a month ago, bearings locked up, and he had to pull off to the side with sqealing/smoking belts.....we just dragged it home with mine Got a new alternator and belts, put them in, and its been fine ever since. The one that failed was a rebuild however, not an original. So I bet it had far less than 278k on it, as the car only had 252k at the time.

Do I hear $10?

It was not such that it had to be fixed, got a ride home, ride to work, I work at a salvage yard, so I have an alt in hand I'll stick on tonight while I find bearings for mine. It just bugged me, little different bracket scheme and I'd have it here at the shop. I drove VW's for so long I immediatly compare everything to them, and a lot of times for stuff like this the MB does not come out on top. (insert "I really do like and respect my MB" disclaimer here)

I can't believe one of you MB Nuts has not found me a nice VW or 240 Volvo to tempt me out of my 123 with..

I know of a "nice" VW diesel pick-up that I could offer you in trade. Nice meaning it hit a deer head on and I could get it cheap.

Ask a young lady for her pantyhose, cut the alt. belts, wrap the panty hose around the crank pulley and water pump pulley and tie it off.

You could probably find by trial-and-error the actual size belt needed to run just the crank and water pump. Would require some effort getting it on, but would sit in the trunk and only be used in emergencies such as yours.

I pulled and alt from work, stuck new brushes in it and put it on last night. It was not overly plesant, but not a horror. Easier with a lift, the back upper bolt is a *****. Then the climate control quit, hour of resoldering control panel and cleaning relays onboard and it's fine again. Poor old car..

Friend of mine looked at a really nice A2 Jetta turbo diesel yesterday, I could have cried.

The bearings started to go bad on mine two weeks ago, luckly they started to die when I was close to home.
