300D 5-speed gear ratios
I just bought a 1983 300D 5-speed. It is everything a used MB diesel should be - one owner, garaged, 2500 mile oil changes, redline in every tankful, like new interior, AC but no climate control, perfect - not even a door ding- body, original excellent paint, and it was cheap. It is a thrill to drive. The car lacks one thing from being about perfect - a tachometer. So here is my question. Does anyone know the gear ratios on this thing?
All the w123 4 -speeds are (3.90, 2.30, 1.41, 1.00). I suppose that the 5-speed is a 4-speed with an overdrive 5th gear. Does anyone actually know for sure? Another question - will a 617a turbo engine fit right on this transmission? I think that all I have to do is keep the flywheel from this engine and that's about it and maybe a larger radiator. Thanks

no, no, no.. See, you must first send me the flywheel. This must always be the very first order of business..
Congrats on the new car, and on being an object of envy and hate for so many of us..

Yup, the 5-speed is a 4-speed with an overdrive. There are multiple flavors: cast iron with a flat top (pic 1 - you must have the bellhousing for this one to bolt it to a 617), the aluminum one piece (pic-2) and I believe that there is a cast iron box with a sloped top (no pic).

Everything a used MB should be? But you want to change it, sell it to someone who will appreciate it for what it is.
