85 Wagon
I bought a 85 wagon in St. Augustine FLA a few days ago. It is white on tan. It has a new turbo and trans. I gave 2000 for it. runs really good and has been serviced. I am only worried about the mileage 248,000. What do you guys think?

Just change that oil and filter every 3-5K miles, change the tranny fluid and filter every 15-20K mi, adjust the valves every 15K mi, keep those belts and hoses in check, make sure all fluids are ok, and run it hard, and it'll be alright. You have what we call a "low-mileage" car.

If you have good cold starts, and it doesn't smoke too much once warmed up, the engine is probably fine.
If you keep up that good maintenance you may get another 100k out of her. I recently bought an 82 300TD with 245k on it, and it looks and sounds great. The engine is in excellent shape (thanks to good maintenance). I have no reason to believe that it won't give me excellent service for years to come, and neither do you. Good find, BTW, and at a good price. peace, sam

Only a puff or two on start up. I think it needs glow plugs because the light is out on the dash.

Glow plugs are an easy swap. If you are doing, one, do them all at the same time.
Glow plug light out means that either the little bulb is out, the relay is out, or two or more glow plugs are out. When you turn the key, wait about 45 seconds and listen for a 'click' under the hood, and a slight brightening of the dash lights, which will indicate that the relay switched off. If you hear that, the relay is probably fine. You can also use a multimeter to check the resistance of each glowplug. 1.0 ohms or less is good, more is questionable, and no continuity is totally dead. peace, sam

We bought our 83SD in August with 251k on it.....it had a little bit of rust issues (promptly took care of them) and we had to replace the alternator/tires last month, but otherwise its been very reliable and has an excellent tranny/nothing leaks! Nothing! I should take a picture of the engine and tranny, its so dry. Mine sure doesn't look like that.

Welcome dieselman, the '85 was a great year (the last, too) for that model. I own two wagons, a '79 (the first year) and an '85. I just completed another 3900 mile trip in the '85 and every time I do a trip like that I like them more.
Mileage is nothing on these, provided PO did some maintenance and by that I mean in addition to changing oil and coolant regularly they replaced steering and suspension components, 20 years is a long time for that sort of thing you know. This Forum is the place to get all the info you need on it, try the search button too. Oh yes, a new trans made that a sure deal, because that is one thing I have heard is a weak item in the '85s and is relatively hard to find, it differs from earlier 123 automatics. The trans in my '85 is serving me well after almost 6 years, but I lost the one in my '79 (converted to use an '85 turbo engine) a new rebuild set me back $2500 because the valve body cracked. Have the tranny serviced by an INDY that drains the torque converter. You will need a good INDY too, unless you have the capabilities for DIY fluid changes like that. 1971 220 4-spd manual 105258 1979 300TD w/ ’85 turbo engine 296390 1983 300D 239670 1985 300TD 223450 1987 300D 260000

Well actually I am not new to the forum. I have a 80 SD which I love dearly. I also have 1987 190d 2.5 which frankly does not get the respect it deserves. I am serious. If I pull in to a shop its like oh a 190. It is a great little car. Starts better than any diesel I have seen in the cold. The TD is my second. I did the quick blow by check by taking the oil cap off. Not much vapor. I think I did okay the wagon actually looks almost perfect and the engine is dry. I will have to see.....
