Thumbs up Wood Grain Trim - replacement/locating?

Is this stuff sold aftermarket or are we limited to scouring the boneyards (or bribing people that have access to them ) to locate it?

Do I even dare bring up MB dealer as an option for some of this stuff?

My new (to me) SD is in dire need of wood grain, I have it for the center area but I'm talking it's missing on a few door panels and such!

Thanks all.

ebay has wood peices for our cars pretty cheap sometimes....try typing in "mercedes 126"...thats a pretty broad search, but if theres any wood trim to be found, it should come up under that...

you should just try calling the local dealer, and get some prices...if youd like a good laugh

If no luck there, try Fastlane here, or try Adsitco.com

I feel you man! Ive been looking for wood trim everywhere. Ebay sometimes has stuff but is in short supply for 126. The pieces i need are for the corner ends of the dash and the dash wood itself and they seem almost impossible to find because no place sells it and the junkyards that have these cars have the same wood trim pieces damaged or missing. The best bet is finding someone with a 126 in good shape that recently got in an auto wreck and needs to salvage the car. The easy pices to find are for the ashtray, glove compartment, and sometimes the center console piece. If its a europeean model, forget about it.

I know that a "carpenter" isnt always easy to find, but, if you gave him the old one, couldnt anyone skilled with woodwoorking tools recreate something that would fit (and with careful sanding/cutting...fit well ?).
My father in law has a basic wood shop in has garage, and knows all the wood places (that sell wood...) in cincinnati. I figured that if I needed new wood pieces I'd ask him what he/we could do (Father in law is a good guy)

Beyond that, if the wood is still in one piece and just has a cracked coating (glaze? clearcoat?) then that one guy has a DIY strip and recoat on his page...lemmie surf it up.

linky to wood refinishing by boostnbenz

I wonder if the trip can be removed (if you arent sure how, look at the junkyard with pieces already off, and bring a digicam to post pics =)) and reworked like the larger pieces in the boostnbenz page.

The only place I have found replacement trim is salvage. $$$ from anywhere to buy it new. The only place that I know of that sells it for an "older" car is Performance Products. (go figure, you can find it all day long for new cars, that hardly ever "need" it)

Also, it is doubtful that you could find anyone to do the "woodworking" approach. If they did it for less, you are robbing them.

The wood trim is a "sandwich" of base wood, aluminum, and a super-thin veneer. It is hard to find even someone who would refinish it and guarantee any kind of results.

Had the same problem with my last 300TD and I finally bought a piece of Formica in a matching woodgrain(close as I could match it) to what was in my car. A Neighborhood Cabinet Maker using the old piece as a template cut me exact new piece--he had those lazer type cutting saws and the New Piece was exactly same size as the old--I used 3m Contact cement cement to arrach the piece-I only replaced the piece in the center consule around the shift lever but suppose it would work as well with the other pieces for very little $$--all the old stuff I could find was not in much better shape then what I had. Looked good and was durable.

You can get Zebrano veneer.

ebay

It is not difficult to apply on small pieces like this.
They use vacuum for most larger pieces...
but with these, you can use the method
of applying contact cement to both the veneer and the base.

Spray it with a few thin coats of polyurethane and you're done.
