Question oil capacity for a 617?

i need to know what the oil capacity is for my 1985 300sd, OM617...ive had this car for over 3 years and never understood how easy it is to change the oil in these things...granted, im doing it the man's way...ive bought close to $80 worth of stuff to get it done, but the satisfaction of doing it myself is well worth it...i was really considering buying a topsider to pull the oil out, but its just way too easy to pull the drain plug out at the bottom....jiffy lube loses another customer to DIY ...

im thinking the cap. for my car is something like 8.5 quarts...is this correct?

According to the owners manual for my '81SD,(617 turbo) oil capacity is 7.8 qts.
Good luck.

It doesn't all come out though. Some stays in the oil cooler lines and radiator cooler, so make certain to underfill, run for awhile, check consistently, till you get the feel for amounts.

Thumbs up Vell...

My 1985 300SD takes eight US quarts.
Remove cover and filter, drain oil, replace drain plug seal ring, install new filter cover O rings, install new filter, add eight quarts oil.

If your lower drain pan is not damaged, the level should be correct after running ninty seconds and setting with engine off for an hour.

Yes, its better to underfill by a little than to overfill.

On my 300TD (OM617), the capacity is listed at 7.8q, and I throw about 7 quarts in right away. Then I run the car up to temperature and drive around a bit, then top up if necessary.

peace,
sam
