Rough idle and hard start

1981 300D non-turbo

The way I start the car is to press the gas pedal to the floor. I get grey smoke from this.

So I've replaced the pre and spin on filter and hand pump. I am waiting on diesel purge.

My current fix has been to turn up the idle at the dash and start the car as described. When I try to bleed the injector lines @ the injector I see a foamy discharge, which causes me some worry.

The idle problem exists at any temp , not just start up, and the hard starting seems elliviated some bit if the car has been sitting for a very short time say 30 mins.

I am really interested in opinions of the foamy fuel at the injector lines, seems
bad but I'm not sure.

Well, part of your problem may be you're pressing a GAS pedal! Ok, really though, you may need new GPs, that gray smoke is probably unburnt fuel.

This sounds like you are getting air in the system somewhere?
Is your primer pump leaking (does it juice your hand when you pump it?)
Are your fuel lines all secure and not swiss cheese?
Filters on good?
The foamy thing is a problem...mine sends out realitively non-foamed fuel.

This is probably related to your hard starting problem...so start here.

again I'm sure there is no air between the tank and the spin on filter as I bleed at the spin on filter and i get nice clear diesel. The hand pump was replaced as mentioned. I'm just not sure how foamy the fuel at the injectors is supposed to be. again though the idle doesn't improve with temp it stays the same

Injector return lines wet and weaping? If so they are letting air in and priming with the pump will not reveal that.
