Quick question on diesel purge of your car

I am thinking about doing both my SDs but have always been concerned about taking the hard plastic lines loose and then trying to put them back on after the purge treatment.
If yours are like mine they are original and look very fragile. In addition I'm thinking you need to somehow bend them down into the can but do they ever break in two on you? Bear in mind it is in the low teens here right now so I will wait until it hits at least 40.

Also where can you find replacement clear plastic fuel lines like those?

Lastly which brand of purge really gets the job done. I'd like to only do it once.

I've never done a diesel purge on mine in the 1.5 years/14,000 miles of owning it, and I've never had a decrease in power or change in how it performs since we got it....I do run additives like Mystery Oil often, and I drive in a manner that keeps it blasted clean, so would there even be much benefit from using it on my engine? I think mine runs very well, thats why I ask, it certainly its a bit more peppy than our 83 is......that one could probably use a purge, but the injectors or ALDA might need some tending to, its slow off the line but once its going it moves essentially as powerfully as mine does. The only difference is that mine idles a bit quieter, and also takes off quite a bit quicker from a standstill.

Thumbs up Routine Scheduled Maintenance

I'm new here, but I'm on my third W123 diesel. Diesel Purge is Routine Scheduled Maintenance, same as Oil Change, Valve Adjustment, IP Timing, et al.

I drive in a manner similar to that which you describe, and I never notice any deterioration in performance. Even so, when I do the Purge, the engine idles more quietly, and generates less smoke, both to a noticable degree. The decline is too subtle to notice as it occurs; It can be seen only when it is suddenly eliminated.

I suggest you try it. If you really don't see an improvement, then you needn't do it again. If the fuel lines are damaged, they needed replacement anyway.

Don't undo the plastic lines..
Undo the rubber ones (where the little filter is down below) and the cigar hose.
This will be your in and out into your vessel of goodness. I am pretty sure if you either visit the DIY pages (its a sticky at the top of the forum) or do a search you will see the correct, easy procedure.

Look up this post

I just asked the same question under the post "first time lubro molly - what do I do?" or something like that.

I just did this last week. You need 2 cans lubro moly, four feet of fuel line 5-16 inch cut into two 2ft. pieces and two bolts or I used the plastic cap off of a tube of caulking to plug your unhooked fuel lines. You will need new fuel filters - one can type ane one clear pre-filter for injection pump.

Unhook the funny shaped cigar hose at the can type fuel filter. Cap off.
Unhook the fuel line going into the clear pre-filter on injection pump. Cap off.

Take an empty jar or I used an old apple juice bottle of about 2 quarts. I drilled a hole in each side enough to push the 2 pieces of 2ft fuel line I bought at the auto parts store in. Push one of them to the bottom and connect it to the plastic pre filter alread on the car.

Take the second 2ft line and push it into the bottle - but not into the bottom of bottle. This is your return line. Connect it to the place on top of the can filter where you unhooked cigar shaped hose. Tighten clamps.

Fill plastic bottle with 2 cans Lubro moly and secure cap and bottle. Start engine. You will see fuel shooting out of the return hose into the bottle. It will pick up fuel from the bottom of bottle. Eventually the liquid will start turning black with crud. Run engine at varying speeds until lubro moly is almost all used up. I duct taped my plastic bottle which becomes your fuel tank temporarily into the compartment over the wheel well and drove like a bat out of hell around the neighborhood for about 3 miles. I carried my screw driver with me in case the bottle went dry and I had to reconnect the lines. But no problem! I kicked in turbo several times and kept it floored. When I got home, I reconnected lines and changed pre-filter and can filter.

Loosen bolt 20mm bolt on top of can filter to remove it. Repace both filters as they catch all this crap!! Then turn little white knob on Injection pump counter clockwise and pump it up and down to prime the air out of your fuel system. I left the cigar hose undone at the can type filter till all the air was out. Then reconnected it. Close pump by turning opposite way. Start engine. If it cuts off, prime again and restart. You will notice more power and better idle immediately.

The problem there is that you are not getting the entire benefit. By returning the unused portion of the purge (fuel) back into the bottle or can, you are allowing a fairly high concentrate to run through the system several times.

Some people report lots of black stuff being returned into the jar the first time the purge is done. I am doing mine this weekend and am hoping I gets lots of cleaning done to reduce some of my increasing smokiness.

In an ideal world I guess you could run about 4 cans through the intake only and then the excess, unburned portion would just add some "cleaner" to your fuel tank.

Thnaks for all the responses...

I know I should have used the search I was short on time last night when I posted. Sorry all... and me a huge proponent of the search tools here...

Anyway, the rubber hose is the plan. Good call on the fuel pump cigar hose connections as the plastic lines never get touched. Thanks!

Yeah I used the rubber hoses a while back when I ran my 1L of biodiesel that I made.
That picture is the handy dandy way to get the tubes in there without making a humongous mess of the place. Also this allows you to see the state of your rubber hoses as you will be bending them around A LOT. if they get brittle and are cracking its time to replace

Dont forget, the cigar hose is special...its like that for a reason...so unless you are in a short term bind, make sure you replace it with the proper unit

Let us know how the purge treats your auto.
