Winter question? DOH

How many of you have driven off with the engine heater cord still plugged in? I did it this morning (not the first time, BTW). Got lucky, and it didn't tear the wires out this time.

I have yet to do that. Notice "yet"

I usually almost trip over the cord walking to the drivers door, usually that reminds me.

Damn, that's funny. This is my first winter with the car and I was saying to my wife just last night, as I was plugging in the block heater, "I wonder how long it will be before I forget to unplug this in the morning?"

I'm even worse, I don't have a block heater, but I have a big snow brush/ice scraper thing, and I used it to clean the car off, then I had set it on the roof, proceeded to work under the hood filling the washer fluid and making an inspection, and then I closed the hood, tossed the bottle, and took off, completely forgetting the snow wand on the roof , needless to say, I QUICKLY remembered about it when it clunked down the back window out on the main road a few minutes later A snow plow went by right after that, and threw it up on the snow bank before any cars ran over it....So lucky. So I went back, pulled ino the side street near it, and climbed the bank to get it back , went back to car, realized I had gotten stuck by pulling over and parking in 2 feet of snow at the side of the road on a slight hill, proceeded to allow car to dig (burn) its way out for 5 minutes, and went on my merry way. I'll never forget my snow wand again....I hope....

I won't ever have to worry about it here in Texas probably, but if I was in colder climates I would HAVE to wrap extension cord around side mirror or I would forget it for sure. When/if I get my wagon back on the road, I will try my block heater just for grins, as it does have one.
You folks up north just can't believe how alien it is for me to think about climbing up a plowed snow bank. I only know about road tar melting in the summer....

Safety reminders

If for any reason I cannot drive car before doing something else first I take the towel I keep under the seat and cover the steering wheel w/ it. So far this has kept me out of trouble. Joe

When I used to use a block heater I draped the extension cord GENTLY around the hood star. Pretty hard to miss.

i watched the wife drive off and drag the extension cord with it for about 50 ft before all the slack was taken up and it separated
go outside and reel the cord back in with smirk on face
she never knew anything had happened!

Talking I am not sure if anyone would admit to this.

Rats! I have a video, that my brother sent me, for the readers in our northern climes. But it is a .wmv and haven't seen a way to attach.

Anyway, it shows someone, with about a foot of snow on his car, going through the ordeal of scraping and clearing the snow. Shivering, numb fingers and all. Then, when he is finished, he disables the alarm with his key fob remote. To find, in disgust when the lights flash and chirps come from another car, that he has just cleared the windows of someone else's car.

I have done that, but with family cars it does not matter, I have to clean them all off.

Possible remedy

I use an electrical socket that I buy at any boat supply. It's a "through hull" design with a built in water proof cover. I mount mine right up next to the windshield so I don't drive off without removing the extension cord ..............again

Since I am alergic to tundra, and the weather that causes it, I have no need of a block heater. But it's very useful for a trickle charger for those vehicles that aren't driven very often.

Also useful for that old Sears "weed burner" electric fence charger that I keep hooked up in my trunk. Now and then, in the middle of the night, I have heard the voice of regret when some dog learns not to piss on my wheels.

Very satisfying.

I wish something like that would work with cats! Nothing pisses you off more than finding muddy foot prints after you spent the previous day washing and waxing.

However, I found something at Griots Garage that may do the trick!

Here kitty, kitty!

One time and I hope the last. I drove early in the morning to pick up my father and give him a jump on his pick-up. He looks at me and asks what happened?

I looked confused, then he points. "Look."

The extension wire was pulled out, wires and all. I did notice my car stutter when getting out of the garage, but it never passed my mind. When your cold as snow, you are in such a hurry to go and get the car warmed up!

I was ashamed....
