Angry Need help, oil in anti-freeze 80 240d!

I am not happy, just finnished replacing head gasket including flush and refill of Dex-Cool (Yeah the expensive kind!) anti-freeze, ran it around the block and the nice orange color was black! When I did the head gasket I thought that was the only place for water and oil to mix but there has got to be somewhere else, any ideas? Not running very smooth either. Thanks for any assistance in advance!

Two awful thoughts enter my mind: Cracked block. Cracked head.

Is it possible that there could have been just water in your car's cooling system at some point in the past, and that it subsequently froze?

Not sure what else could crack a block. Could washing a hot engine with cold water do it?

Good luck with your 240D...

I have only had the car a little less than 2 weeks. I drove it to work 2 days after I bought it then it started doing this. Possible that it wasn't where it should have been on coolant protection I guess. It does have an oil puddle under it so I'll be checking that out in the morning. Thanks for your thoughts!

Any reason to think that the PO was trying to get rid of a known problem?

Not really, worked fine when I looked it over the first time but had been basically sitting for several months. I continue to hope that it is something that I can fix without replacing the engine. Is the water pump self lubed or does it use oil?

water pump

Never saw a water pump on car lubricated by anything other than coolant or sealed bearing. Allow that I have led a sheltered life though. Seems Funny that car is not running well though as leakage is between oil source and coolant. Nothing to do with combustion space. Unless crack or whatever is quite extensive. Also cannot remember any oil/coolant heat exchange device on this model outside of block/ head area. Wonder if you checked head and deck but mostly head for flatness before completing gasket change. When you were flushing /cleaning did you turn heater on to get any trapped oil out of heater system? Or just turn on during drive with new coolant? Own a couple of these and would be pretty disturbing to have happen. People with more experience will probably give much better advice especially about most common failure on these as there are a few 616s around. (hopefully oil pool on ground is from head to block joint area as you might get a break locating the problem) ( if automatic make sure leakage is not between auto transmission cooler and radiator forgot to include this) (one last thing is to go over old gasket you changed for any evidence of failure or poor contact)

I guess I am just grasping for straws. The head was flat, didn't detect any cracks or anything that I could point to that was obvious while changing the head gasket. The oil on the ground wasn't coming from anywhere on top that I could see although there was a small leak from the front of the new valve cover gasket around the timing chain. I haven't drained the oil yet but there were no signs of water in the oil looking at the dipstick. I don't work tommarow so I'll tear into it further then. Thanks for the help!
Also when I flushed it I did flush the heater core. The oil in the coolant is dark/sooty so I believe it is engine oil. Old gasket looked to be ok, I didn't see any signs of seepage or obvious problems with it.

thanks.

I would do the exact same thing i guess. Indirectly you did me a favor though. The car i purchased in new jersey a week or so before christmas I drove home 900 miles and stored outside across the street till spring. Your thread jarred me into remembering I did not check anti freeze other than looking into rad before coming home as he took car out of heated garage. (standard 1982 240d) Only had a quick look to make sure was green. Has not got as cold as usual around here yet so will check it for sure tomorrow morning. Who knows maybe you saved my engine. Still a sorry state of affairs if someone elses misfortune is what it takes. (Only threw in the possibility of transmission fluid as sometimes have seen some pretty dark fluid on end of transmission dipstick on these older cars. Burnt pretty bad comes to mind)

With no "visible" cracks, I wouldn't really expect a crack did this..
If ANYTHING, it is probably a either wrong/distrubed/messed up gasket that is allowing an oil passge to hook to a water port...
Did you get the gasket on good...compare it to the old one...check the fit?

I wouldn't say cracked head just yet, espically when you just dropped a new gasket on and checked it for HUGE visual cracks..

Hmm

Compared the gaskets, they were the same and matched up with the head and block well. Jury is still out, tried a couple of other different things today as well. Found oil coming from the area where the engine meets the transmission and fixed a small coolant leak. Not sure where to go with it next, still isn't running well, uneven with a bunch of white smoke.

Also, I wouldn't use DexCool in anything! Not even a GM that recomends it. Get some Zerex G-05 which is basically the same as Mercedes coolant.

I thought that the Dex Cool was supposed to be easy on the aluminum part ect. Zerex is better?

http://www.valvoline.com/pages/products/product_detail.asp?product=10

Someone in there it states it's the same thing as Mercedes coolant. DexCool is suppose to be GM's extended use antifreeze. I have seen this crystalize and turn to a gel in several vehicles. Our Antifreeze recycler hates it too, as it clogs his filters.
