300D Torn Boot
My '85 300D has a torn inner CV boot...not sure how long. After reading the archives on the subject, it appears the axle is probably about gone, and 're-booting' not practical. Lots of folks are using the rebuilt Carquest and Autozone 'lifetime' parts, and failures are not uncommon. I'll probably put one of these on the car. Meanwhile, I have the '84 300TD Euro. Visually, the boots don't look any better than the 300Ds, and one is probably going to rip soon. I'm thinking of 're-booting' the 300TD (it is said the factory parts are of better quality than the rebuilts), but the Mercedes boot kits are roughly $40 to $50 each. I'd end up paying about the price of rebuilt axles!
Is it worth it to retain the originals? Thanks,

Are you going to re-boot the axels on the car or what ??--if you remove the axels re-build all of it,i did my 300td for about 800.00 or i should say had it done. Dennis

My personal opinion is that the CarQuest remanufactured axles are a crapshoot. You never know whose axle you are getting and what the condition was. If you don't mind the labor every 30-60K then these are certainly the way to go.
If your own axle boots are intact and not failed, you can take them out and send them to these fellows who will regrease them and put on new boots for $100. per axle. Not cheap, but, at least you know what you have. http://www.cvjreman.com/ |
