OM606 Observation
Hi,
On a 95 E300D, I hear a nailing sound between 1100-1200 rpm only when the car is in Park or Neutral. Other than that, the car idles fine with no nailing. It does sound like a jar of marbles only when cold. Could it be the injectors? Its just little strange that I hear this nailing at a certain RPM. I run injector cleaner but it hasnt really made a huge difference. |

Just to be sure; check your engine mounts and start of delivery timing before replacing injectors. Since you get nailing only in neutral, I would tend to think it is an engine load based problem. Does it go away or change after the engine gets warm?

You should also check the belt tensioner and engine shock. You can do this by pushing a long stick against these two components, and seeing if the noise/nailing diminishes.
Be careful, and stay clear of any moving parts in that area. Phil

Thanks guys,
THe nailing happens when engine warm. It nails when the engine isnt under load, so if the car is parked or just coasting , I can hear the "nailing like" sound at about 1100 rpm or so. I will check the tensioner, however I have a question about checking the timing. I know I wont be able to do it myself, however what are we checking here>? The IP ? I am really rusty with diesel engines, I am starting to read books about them |

I talked to a tech briefly about it but they can time the IP but in my 606, the manifold has to come off. Not sure about yours becuase my 606 is the turbo version and I heard that the manifold structure is different. Supposedly they will time the squirt to be in line with the harmonic balancer and it will quieten down the engine.

I think that as long as the injection pump is mechanical, all that would have to be removed would be a fuel injection line btw the pump and the injector as similar to 617 engine. This I cannot be certain of; but I don't see why they would need to remove the inj manifold to adjust the timing unless it somehow blocks access to the rotation of the injection pump. Otherwise, the balancer & its timing marks is what needs to be watched.

I sort of know what you mean. On my car, especially when it is not fully warmed up, when I'm driving around a parking lot which means light throttle and then letting off, I hear a rush of what sounds like nailing when I back off the throttle. It is different than a hard nailing sound like trying to start a very cold engine makes. It is only on release throttle conditions, and it disappears when the engine reaches full idle.
I put it down to "they all do that" type thinking. It seems worse on my car when cold. I don't worry about it any more. Rgds, Chris W. '95 E300D, 178K |

ChrisW, i think we are both on the same page. It doest bother me much, but when I hear it, it gets me thinking. When I will take the car to my mechanic for a ball joint replacement, I will ask him to listen to the engine.
Also, does your engine seem little rough for the first few seconds after startup, when cold? Mine does that, I will be checking for glow plug resistance, but Im sure they cant fail after theyve been replaced 15K miles or so. |

I think every/any diesel is going to seem rough when started cold. If you are in Toronto, it's REALLY cold sometimes....
When my car is cold, like after sitting outside all night, I glow mine until I hear the relay click, which winds up being a good 30 - 40 seconds after the glow light goes out. If it is really cold, like 15F, I'll glow it 2 cycles like that. I just started using the block heater for this recent cold snap, and it definitely gives the car a head start on warmup.
