Just another diesel oddity, I was recently given a one cylinder liquid cooled Onan diesel engine used to power a reefer back in the late 1970's. It even runs! 30 cid giving a hugh 7.3 hp. The heavy cast-iron beast may end up in my over-built wood splitter (I didn't build it! ).
If it's diesel, I like it.

What's the reliability of one of those Isuzu engines compared to a VW 1.6? I think the VW is good for 52 horsepower... it seems like the Isuzu engine doesn't have to work as hard.

My understanding was these were far more long lasting.............the VW wasn't junk , but the Isuzu was better.

My parents had a single-cylinder Onan generator when we lived off the power grid for a few years in the early '70s. I think that started my fascination with Diesels.

I've owned 3 diesel VW's and the oldest of them had 611,000 kms on it when I sold it, and to the best of my knowledge, it had never been rebuilt. It was a n/a. It still ran strong, and didn't use any amount of oil either. The Isuzu in my truck has 500,000 kms on it and is also strong. Which s better? Good question. I'd say they're both good engines.
