Check out this CHEVETTE DIESEL.....

Found this on ebay and thought it was pretty interesting. It's a 1982 Chevette Diesel; I never knew they even had such a thing.

those were gutless wonders...............but they outlasted even the Benz engines................a lot of those really have gone way more than 400,000 miles without having been opened up. No class or comfort but a real long lasted ride.

...good thing too because there's no room to spin a wrench under the hood of one of those.

And just for those that almost care, or may be curious, the Chevette/Acadian diesel used a Isuzu 1.8L ohc, rated at a whopping 51hp/72ft-lbs. The car weighed about 2200lbs, so the 0-60 was 21.2 sec. Fuel mileage was great, of course, at a combined 41 mpg. Terrific Isuzu reliability in a crappy little Chevette.
Nice attempt. Wrong execution.

Here in Miami I located a 1983 Isuzu two-door in fair shape with about 120,000 miles (actually 20K on a 5-digit odo). It was red and I thought about buying it, but when I asked, they told me it had been sold to some from Las Vegas on E-Bay for $900.

They run the same Isuzu engine in minibuses in Central America and Santo Domingo, where they seem to last forever with minumal maintainence over all manner of bad roads, fording streams with them, zooming down cobblestone streets in mountain villages and such.

I remember those Isuzu Imark diesels, well engineered little cars but subject to the "rice rot" so common to the steel bodies of Nippon.

There is one driven regularly by an elderly lady nearby.

A co-worker of mine owned one of those. Exact color too. It wasn't that bad in traffic - I believe it had a manual transmission. Illinois salt very quickly turned the body into a pile of rust. The engine was then used in some type of stationary function on a farm amd still going strong last I heard.

I've put a push-rod Isuzu diesel in my Sonoma (rated at 58hp), and although it had 500,000kms showing on the donor truck when I removed it, it works great. I think they are a strong, reliable engine. Not overly powerful, mind you.
I expect there are many more miles left in the old girl. And the truck too.

Unhappy Hmmm

Sister had one, until her husband filled the 13 gallon tank with 12.5 gallons of gasoline, and drove to and from work = over 85 miles.
Head gasket gone, warped head.

She was ticked off, got 45 - 50 MPG.

Isuzu diesel = excellent. Been the original owner on my 86 T/D Isuzu. I had figured up a few months ago my cost of ownership (repairs) in the last 18 years has been about $8.00 month 230K on the clock

Yeah--those old Isuzu diesels are very reliable. Guy I work with has an old Isuzu diesel pickup I keep asking him to sell me. It just goes and goes and goes.

Boy I sure wish somebody would offer a SMALL diesel pickup in the US. Only choices now are the big Full size jobs...

Maybe they just realize if they sold a reasonalbly priced, well made compact diesel truck it just might last forever and no repeat business a few years down the road!!
