Hey VeeDub-How did you like your TDI New Beetle??

The Beetle was a great car. It was nice driving a sporty diesel. I had it chipped, which made the engine produce 210 lb-ft of torque at 1900 rpms. Stiffer springs helped a lot too. But, with that being said, it wasn't a Mercedes, and I really missed my 190D. I'm glad to be back in a Mercedes (100% mechanical!... no silly computers here), and I'll have to work on making it a bit sportier... once all of the maintenance is up to date.

just for fun, I have the original sticker for my 84 300SD with optional sunroof, 37,750. I think that would equate to 65K in current $

However, the 2001 S-Class LWB model S430 had a list price of 70K USD + change. An '84 300SD would equate to about 64.4K USD for the 2001 model year. The W126 was always considered too spartan for it's price, but the sales were strong up until the introduction of the W140. Remember two things. The S-Class W126 300SD is a SWB, and it is a non-V8. No, I know that the S430 is the entry-level S-Class for the W220, but it is still a V8 and a LWB. After the last SD's, MB started pricing their cars a little higher. $51,070 for an '87 base model. That would equate to around the mid 80 thousands in today's money. Of course a '92 W140 600SEL would listed for about the same equivalent price of an SL65 AMG(about 170K USD). Interesting, huh!

I am pretty sure the base S430 is a short wheel base car. Wouldn't a long be a S430L?
Btw the W220's are holding their value better then the W140's! The cheapist one I have seen was listed for $28k.

Mercedes axed the "L" designation in fall of '93, when all their models had their class letters preceding the engine number. IMHO, in regards to price, the W220 is a much prettier, more popular, and much more practical S-Class than the W140. So between that and the fact that the model is still in production, they are probably worth it. In Europe, where as many streets are narrow, as garages are cramped, the slightly reduced dimensions for the S are welcome among buyers.
