Do a search - there's lots of posts. Basically you're going to turn the allen screw OUT a quarter turn at a time. Eventually, when you keep adjusting, it gets too tight to operate and you screw it up - be careful. It may not be able to be adjusted to like new.

Before adjusting the box check the front end for wear and rattles. Your play is within spec. These are not rack and pinion cars and will have some play. The critical factor is if the car is tracking steadily. Adjusting the box to eliminate play almost always places undue wear on the steering box sector and can induce memory steer from binding. It may only give you the illusion of tighter control. Take the car for a drive afterwards and give it a couple of lock to lock turns to make sure the wheel recenters on its own. If it doesn't you've gone to far. The actual box preload procedure from the manual is quite detailed, and assumes a fresh suspension. A forum search will reveal exhaustive detail on box adjustment.

Loose Steering
When I bought my 300CD, the steering was very loose. It felt as if I were not really steering, merely offering suggestions.
I took 1.5 turns CCW out of the steering box. The steering is still a little vague, but far more comfortable. I did the test (lock to lock) and it is smooth, so I think I'm in my happy place. Alan the Radio Nut |

Mine had excessive slop when I bought it!
Adjusted mine about 1.5 turns out also..... much better, but am concerned that I went too far. I suppose I will turn it back in a 1/4 turn at a time until the play comes back then settle on a happy medium. Box rebuilds look pricey.

A new steering damper might help as well.
