Question Feasible to import E220 diesel

Would it be possible to import a around a 1995 E220 diesel from Europe to America ? How much would have to be changed ? Headlights ? Everything else should meet US specs ?

Have you checked out the NHTSA guidlines for importing cars?

E220 was never imported officially, so its a no go, officially.

Simple answer is, No.

I could give you a whole lot of guff about why, but you can go read for yourself if you want the nitty gritty. If it's 25 years or older then you can bring it in no trouble.

Interesting, though, that a 1993 220E is eligible for importation. At least according to their chart

Actually if you read the heading for the page, it is capable of being modified by a certified importer, not the same thing at all.

What it means is that you can pay a registered importer to modify it and make it suitable for use on the roads here, you can not just bring it and drive it. Usually this means fitting whatever EPA stuff is required and possibly modifying the bumpers.

I owned a gray market 500 SEL for a while. It came with the original bill from the importer to convert it. I believe it was around $15k.

I've been through this any number of times with any number of car forums. Everyone refuses to believe there isn't a magical loophole, and eventually reaches the same conclusion. Unless you're willing to put down some serious coin, or pick something that's 25 years or older, this is just a non starter.

The nearest we've ever managed to bringing in a non conforming vehicle was with old Land Rovers. We'd buy a vehicle that was over 25 years old, then give it a complete restoration including frame and engine swap to a coil sprung frame and engine of your choice. All done in the country of origin. You then end up with a built from scratch vehicle that is technically similar to its modern counterpart, but with a title that certifies it as over 25 years old. It's only possible with Land Rovers because so much from the Series II or III is similar to the Defender 90 that came later, and because after market frames are readily available and commonly replaced.
