Some diesel stations can really annoy me...
 

Last night I went and filled up my tank, I got a $30 Pilot "everything" card for Xmass and decided to use it. But the gift card was for Pilot and I hate Pilot, their pumps run very slow like 1 gallon a minute slow. Also they are 10 cents more a gallon then my usual station. So I go to Pilot and as usual their pump is very slow, but it gets better. It usually takes about 18 gallons to fill up, so when I hit the 18 mark and the pump didn't kick off I thought that was strange, although I did do all around town driving I figured so maybe I burned a little more. Come 19 gallons I am wondering where all the fuel is going, I look down at the nozzel that seems fine then I look back up and splash, diesel everywhere! All down the side of my car, on my left shoe and pants. :mad: &%&%^&) put on the wrong nozzel so it just kept pumping, now my fresh wax job on that area needs to be redone. Nothing like washing diesel fuel off your car at 8:30 on a cold night. They didn't even offer to give me the tank of fuel %&*)%& I hate Pilot, I havn't been their in 6 months and will never be back.

But these guys were nailed by the EPA a while back, for fuel in the ground. Well I just added another 1/2 gallon, good I hope they get nailed again.

That sucks. It happened to me too, and I've never had that happen with a gasoline filler. Perhaps the low flow diesel pumps are neglected that way and the shutoffs wear out.

I know that automotive gasoline pumps have filters in the pumps. Not sure about diesel pumps. When the owner/manager doesnt change the filter often enough, you have a slow pump. I stop pumping immediately from slow pumps because 1) the fuel level may be at the bottom of the tank and you are picking up aggitated crud (in the case of gasoline - water) 2) the management does not care about what they deliver and I wonder what else they are doing to the fuel. There are enough fuel stations around me that are competitive .

A side note I used to exclusively fill up at a brand new Union 76 three years ago in my 02 van,for my boat and my riding lawnmower. All three developed alcohol damage in the fuel systems. The reason - the station overadjusted for the water level in the bottom of the tank and loaded up on alcohol. Could not prove it, but I know it came from that station. Since then I don't take any chances.

Even if it is slow....sure beats having to go to the gas station! :D And I am sure it promotes good blood circulation in your arms. :)

hattie sometiimes the pump hose gets an air lock. you need to remove the nozzle and hold it up in the air/shake the hose a little then try pumping again... btdt.

i've been to that pilot too (off i-95 near milford right?) and it does leave a lot to be desired :rolleyes:

Hattie, I agree, especially if that's the Pilot on Woodmont, they totally blow. I use the Gulf (Secondi Bros) nearby, have had no problems. Used to be that Mayflower was the place to go, but I think their sun has set.

I've used a veeery similar (if not identical) barrel pump before for collecting WVO, and we were getting about 70 cranks to fill a 5 gallon cubee, meaning 14 ARPG, or about 9 ounces per crank.

Like he said. Slow.

We filled a bus with 180 gallons of WVO using one of those bastards. I felt like Popeye afterwards. ;)

What about taking the handle off that hand-crank pump and using a 1/2" drill to turn it? An 18volt cordless would be even easier.... RT

Yes it is the Pilot off exit 40 in Milford, it is a crap station. I always use the Secondi Bros right down the street, the fuel is usually 10 cents a gallon cheaper and so far no problems.

The manager of Pilot told me they put the wrong nozel on, he showed me the holes it was missing. I bet if I go back in a few months nothing will be done.

I use to go to Pilot as well but I don't anymore either. I live in Hamden and will drive out of my way to go to Secondi's. I find Diesal prices in Hamden the same as in Norwalk which makes no sense to me at all. Besides Secondi's I feel treats me well when I need to go inside and get something. Secondi's has been there all my life and it's nice to support the local people.

Glad to see someone else going there as well.

Well for me it is a no brainer, right on my way to school, cheaper fuel, good fuel, and good service. Besides I know the Secondis their good people.

On Randy's setup the fuel flow is directly proportional to the size of the gorilla turning the handle :P and, I suppose, the filter medium :D
