I am experiencing a rather unusual problem with the wastegate on a 617.950 engine. Since I have never encountered such an issue, I wanted to post it to the forum en masse.
As many of you know, the wastegate on the early 617's with the Garret T-3 Turbocharger have a wastegate that is held in place only by spring tension. In effect, the housing of the wastegate 'floats' on the turbine housing.
While adjusting boost pressure on the bench, I noticed the housing lifts off its seat before the valve lifts off its seat.
The bleed hole in the valve is clear, but the bypass opening on the exhaust side of the turbo housing appears to be plugged. Since this passage is a 90° arrangement, I haven't found a way to clear it yet. However, I don't think this is causing a problem.
Anyone experience this yet???...Bert
