Puzzling switch behind instrument cluster in 1984 300SD

I had my instrument cluster out today. I noticed that the rear dome light was on. Where the instrument cluster was, I found a switch in the upper left hand corner. I pushed the switch in, and the dome light went out. Does anyone know what this switch is for? If someone did not know about this and left the instrument cluster out for a long time, the battery could go dead.

Could that be the secret switch everybody is talking about lately? The one that fixes the transmission? There's a guy on Ebay selling directions on how to find this switch for $5.

BusyBenz,

I have not driven the car without instrument cluster, so I cannot tell for sure if that is the secret switch that fixes the transmission. But, I must say, it is a secret switch.

The "secret switch" is part of the anti-theft system. If the door is locked and you remove the instrument cluster. The alarm will sound.

Seems like a rather primitive anti-theft system

I prefer ones that sample the theif's DNA as they approch the car via cold laser scanning, then send in their genetic analysis to the Crime Lab right as the theft takes place.......I have one of these on my SD, it was $60,000. + the monthly subscription for the dna workups....but worth it. It also disables the glow plugs, just so the theif can *try* to start the car, but...can't.

Sounds reasonable. It looks just the switch found under the hood. But, I wonder what kind of car thief would want to take the instrument cluster out of the car to steal it after getting into the car.

Maybe to get access to the ignition switch?

With those disabled glow plugs that wouldn't help them much....
