hello all...
was just wondering what is considered normal oil consumption for a 1993 300sd with the original motor...i am burning about 1 qt. per 700 miles...when speaking to my mercedes mechanic he told me that mercedes factory gives a range of 1 qt per 500-1000 miles... any info or opinions please.. regards, jim..calif |

While acceptable, it is not normal for a healthy motor.
The last 603 motors got a bad rap about bending rods on #1 cyl. Story often was it was carbon from the EGR. I have seen a number of oil eaters that we never figured out. Put a turbo on one and VG oil seals on a couple. Then we came across a complete failure oil was running out the tailpipe. Thinking it was a serious internal, a motor overhaul was sold and the head was removed. Below are pictures of the problem. I have seen it on three more motors since. I've heard the problem was fixed in later motors so you might be safe. I would recommend keeping a close eye on it.

I have an 1995 s350 with an 603 engine and the oil consumption is the same about 1 L per 1000Kms sometimes even more, have no idea why.

I have a 1993 300 SD and it uses 1/2 qt. 3500 to 4000 miles at which time I change the oil. I have never added any. 92000 miles on it.
