oil consumption 1993 300sd
hello all...
was just wondering what is considered normal oil consumption for a 1993 300sd with the original motor...i am burning about 1 qt. per 700 miles...when speaking to my mercedes mechanic he told me that mercedes factory gives a range of 1 qt per 500-1000 miles... any info or opinions please.. regards, jim..calif |

Are you burning it or leaking it?

oil consumption
If your car has the 3.5L. 603 engine, the worst case scenario is the dreaded "bent rod syndrome". A search using the words "bent rod" will tell you about it, hopefully you can rule it out.

The dreaded bent rod syndrome. I have a '91 350SD and love it. I was burning 1 qt every 800 miles, which mb said was in spec. I then check the oil that my mechanic was using and it was good ol'Valvoline 10w-40. I started running Rotella/Delvac 15w-40 and it lowered my oil consumption to about 1200mi/qt. I then switched to a Rotella 15w-40 blend and it is even better. It also seems that the old the oil gets the quicker it burns.
ANOTHER TRICK: My car likes to burn the top quart off quickly. When I fill it to midpoint on the stick, it doesn't burn as quick. I have heard of this with other MB's as well. So next fill, short it one quart and then add a quart when the oil light comes on. Usually the oil light indicates 2 qts low - so I just add a quart and continue driving. I do have some oil leaks, it became very noticeable when I was running 100% synthetic. I switched to a blend so that it minimized leaking and maximized oil life. Over the past 10k miles, I average 1450miles/qt. Best of luck. btw, mine had the rods changed. it is a horrible syndrome that could happen to a nicer car!!!! |

Interesting.. my 300CD.. significant blowby so muchso that the right side of my engine is covered in oil. If I disconnect the vent tube it looks like a train running down the line. In fact if the tube comes undone on its own (doesn't happen now that the air cleaner isn't loose) I tell by the smoke puffs when at a stoplight.
Last oil change was just over 3000 miles. Like 3025 and I just now hit the lower mark. It is a 617, but it seems like if anything I should go through more oil than a newer motor's spec'd oil consumption.

It seems that the old ones seem to go through less oil. I don't even have to check the oil in my 78 300SD between oil changes. But it is really hard to believe what MB considers normal oil burn....

Now it is parked due to extreme oil consumption (Guessing less than 50 miles a qt) and embarrassing tendencies. It nails, and shakes, and is constantly enshrouded by an oily mist when driving. Mine had the rods done, too. A brand new longblock by Mercedes.

Same here, I don't even check it between changes. Gotta love that with 280K..

My 603 doesn't seem to burn anything, not bad for 244k.

I don't know what I'm going to do with it. Yet. The 350 still runs. Still has plenty of power. Still has life to it. Apart from those issues. Like you Hattie, my 3.0 liter at 286K miles burns not a drop of oil, and has zero blowby even when the engine is running at > 100C. Still though. The only place you can take those Superturbos is to the track. I have more than enough in my cars to get me in serious trouble. I don't have need for any more power.

Why don't you get a compression test done and find the weak cylinder? If it isn't to bad I would re-sleeve the weak one with a new piston, connecting rod, ect. However it is probably to far out, if it were my car I would bite the bullit and buy a new short block from MB.
