Speedo location on trans for 83 versus 85 300D?

The PO installed a 85 transmission in my 83 and never hooked up the speedo, claiming it was in a different location and that he (I) would need a later, longer cable to hook it up. Anyone know where the hook up is on both transmissions and is he right?

If it's an 85 300SD trans, it has an electric speedo, not cable like a w123.
Tailshafts are exchangable, unknown what that involves, or if it would even fit with the elec tailshaft. Info online is sketchy at best.

Look up speedo cables for your year and an 85, see if the part numbers are different.

Thanks, I'll see what I can do. The trans in every way functions correctly but that is how I got it. I honestly can't even find a port for where I think it would go. Can anyone who owns either a 83 or a 84 tell me where on the trans the speedo cable is hook up? What does the port look like?
